About Norman:

Due to my academic obligations, I will be unable to take on new clients during the academic year, unless they are willing to pay substantially in excess of my usual rates. I am still available during winter break and during summer of 2009. Schedule your tutoring for summer 2009 now -- the earlier you schedule, the more scheduling options you will have :-)I am currently a Ph.D. student in mathematics at the CUNY Graduate Center, where I hold an Enhanced Chancellors' Fellowship and a 4.0 GPA. I earned a Bachelor of Arts with honors at Grinnell College, where I graduated with a GPA above 3.9 and earned the Pamela Ferguson Prize, which is given to up to two outstanding graduating Grinnell math students each year. While I was at Grinnell, I tutored calculus and linear algebra for three years in the math lab. I have also worked as a private tutor, tutoring people in high school mathematics and in preparation for standardized tests. When I worked in the math lab at Grinnell, I was many people's favorite tutor. Students appreciated my knowledge, patience, and ability to explain ideas from multiple perspectives. Upon request, I can provide you with contact information for the head of the math lab, who has agreed to serve as a professional reference for me.I earned perfect scores on the SAT math and verbal sections, the SAT II math 2 exam, and the ACT composite, so if you're looking for someone to help you improve your standardized test scores, I would be an excellent choice. I will send you copies of my standardized test scores upon request. I also worked at the Center For Talented Youth as a teaching assistant for a course in Logic for fifth and sixth graders. I especially enjoy working with gifted students.Whether you're looking to pass your Regents' Exam, exceed your expectations on the SATs, ace your finals, get help writing a paper, enhance your academic achievement, or learn more math for fun, I sincerely expect you will find me to be a helpful, energetic, friendly, responsible, and knowledgeable tutor. I look forward to hearing from you.

More On Norman's Subjects:

  • ACT

I earned a perfect 36 composite score on the ACT. I can send you a copy of my ACT scores and other standardized test scores upon request. My experience as a mathematics tutor, discussed elsewhere in my profile, qualifies me to teach the math portion of the SAT test. In addition to my score, my experience learning reading, writing, and thinking skills at an elite liberal arts college qualify me to teach the other sections of the ACT. Additionally, I have past experience tutoring a private client for the ACT.

  • discrete math

Discrete mathematics is one of my favorite areas of math, and one in which I have a large amount of experience. In particular, I have a substantial amount of experience in combinatorics, theoretical computer science, and the theory of finite groups, which are three important areas of discrete mathematics. Combinatorics is a major area of discrete mathematics.

As an undergraduate, I took two combinatorics classes, including an independent study in which I read research-level papers in graph theory. I also served as a grader for a combinatorics class one semester. In graduate school, I occasionally attend the seminar in combinatorics.

Another of my interests in the realm of discrete math is theoretical computer science and computability theory. I took a course in theoretical computer science as an undergraduate. Last semester, I took a graduate course in logic with a strong emphasis in computability theory. I plan to take another course in computability theory next semester.

In my algebra classes as an undergraduate and as a graduate, I have studied some finite group theory. I also did a summer research project in finite group theory as an undergraduate in which I used character theory to solve analyze a counting problem involving the symmetric groups.

  • proofreading

I have always been a strong writer. In high school, I wrote a column for the student newspaper.

My perfect 800 score on the SAT verbal test, perfect ACT composite score and near-perfect 790 score on the SAT II writing test further attest to my writing and proofreading ability. I will gladly send you copies of my standardized test scores upon request.

Over the course of my rigorous liberal arts education, I took many classes that required me to write papers, further developing my writing and proofreading skills. I wrote papers in a variety of disciplines, including philosophy and the social sciences, so I have a good feel for what type of writing is required in different disciplines.

Furthermore, my study of mathematics has given me a strong awareness and understanding of detailed systems of rules. This understanding helps me to apply the rules of grammar and usage correctly and consistently.
