About

Hi! My name is Jennifer. I just moved to the DFW area for a new job. I work with the mental health sector of a medical company, which I enjoy very much so far. I received my Bachelor's Degree in Psychology with a minor in Great Texts (similar to English) from Baylor in May of 2007. After graduation until I started working my new job in this area, I worked as a substitute teacher as well as a note-taker and tutor in the Nacogdoches Independent School District and for Stephen F Austin State University. While I was at Baylor, I worked for Baylor's student athlete services tutoring athletes. I have also tutored friends and peers in many classes since my freshman year in high school. Most of my tutoring has been in psychology, early math, biology, chemistry, and English (with grammar and literature as well as proofreading papers). I have also given piano lessons at the beginners level to about 5 different individuals, as I studied piano for about 10 years. I received titles from district and state competitions and participated in prestigious piano camps, studying with world renowned pianists/teachers of piano pedagogy, such as Tony Caramia of the Eastman School of Music at the University of Rochester. My primary tutoring style is attempting to find a way to make the material fun or useful to the student. I try to get to know the personality and the likes and hobbies of the people I tutor so that I can find a way to make the information studied relevant to them. I find it's a lot easier to remember that way. As far as piano studies go, my focus is not just practicing in playing but also in theory that makes one understand how to play better. My goal is to help you do better, help you remember material and most importantly how to learn it in a way that will be meaningful to you in the future. |

ACT
|
I'd like to be certified to tutor students for the ACT because I know it can be an integral aspect of one's application for college. I first took the ACT at the end of my freshman year, scoring a 26. I retook the ACT a few times in order to raise my score for scholarship purposes. My highest composite score was 30, but I scored at least a 30 or higher in all subsets of the tests one one test or another. My highest score for English/Grammar was 34. My highest score for Math was 30. My highest score for reading was 34. My highest score for Science was 31. I believe I have the proper knowledge in each subject area to help the students review pertinent information for the test, and I feel like I know a lot of techniques for standardized tests that will help students improve their scores even when they are unsure of the correct answer. Thus I believe I would be a very effective tutor for the ACT.

I would like to be certified in piano, because I have a lot of experience not just playing piano but with piano theory and a passion for music. I began taking piano lessons from a very well-known teacher in my area when I was 7. Throughout the years I was taught proper skills as well as scales and theories to know how to play well and how to learn new music quickly. I soon began participating in competitions, which further developed my skills. In junior high school, I went to piano camp at Mississippi State University and received instruction from their leading teachers in piano. In high school, I participated in Mississippi Showcase summer camps, where I was instructed by some of the leading pianists in the country, such as Tony Caramia at the University of Rochester in New York. At showcase, we also played to record a CD or our music, so I have that credential as well. I began teaching basic piano instruction to others at the age of 12. Throughout college, I have provided instruction on elementary to moderate level piano for a few friends. I find great joy from teaching piano and believe I am fully competent to do so.

SPSS
|
I'd like to be certified in this subject because I believe it is an integral part to the practical use of statistics in numerous areas. I have used SPSS for the past three years for research within psychology courses. My first experience with SPSS came in a introductory statistics course lab with emphasis in practical use for psychology. It is in this course that I learned all the basic functions of SPSS and how to use it properly under multiple different experimental scenarios. Since then I have used SPSS multiple times in other classes such as research methods and advanced psychological statistics. I was also a research assistant with a professor for two years in which we transposed qualitative data into quantitative data and analyzed it in SPSS. I feel that I have a strong understanding of the program and how to implement it in experimental situations and would like to help others do the same.
