About
Meegan: |
Does your student think school is boring? Does he/she constantly feel behind in every subject and you can't place a finger on what it might be? Does your student loathe the word "tutoring" because it makes him/her think of endless worksheets and an old, bun-haired lady in glasses drilling rote facts into their brain?
If you answered yes to any of those questions and your student needs some extra help with school, then I am the tutor for you!
I have tutored students professionally for the past 5 years from kindergarten to college in subjects that range from Spanish to SAT Prep to Chemistry to Basic Reading/Math Skills, etc. My students have been from diverse backgrounds including regular education, special education, foster care, religious education and homeschooling.
My approach is simple... make learning interesting and relevant. Get the student out of their seat to find the real-world application of the subjects they have been learning in school. By making learning "hands-on" and relevant, my students have improved their grades in school significantly (some going from F's to B's in a matter of weeks).
While learning the content information, I try and coach students in other important skill areas like time management, study skills, and organization.
I fully believe every student can learn and would love to help your student reach his or her full potential!

study skills
|
I have worked as a professional tutor for the past 5 years. One of the areas that I continually see students needing improvement on is study skills. This is something that is rarely taught in school but is expected of students anyways. Often times students who continually struggle with classwork and particularly test-taking are students who haven't inherently discovered their individual study style.
The way that I approach teaching study skills is through trial and error. The first thing I try to identify is if a student is inherently better at visually, orally, or kinesthetically remembering information. I then build upon their strength to tailor different methods of studying to their lifestyle. For example, flashcards are a common method for memorizing subject matter. They are great for visual learners, but can be modified to meet the needs of auditory learners by having the student read the information aloud or kinesthetic learners by having them organize the cards into categories.
Teaching study skills is kind of like giving students a toolbelt... they need a variety of techniques to choose from when coursework becomes difficult and when tests and quizzes loom. A certain set of skills may work for one child but not for another, so it is important to continually try new methods to find a unique set of study tools for each child.
