Learn More About Laurie's Experience:
discrete math
I have worked with special needs children in grades Kindergarten through 5th grade. I teach reading and math. I know the Nevada state standards and am able to teach various basic math concepts in different ways so children understand.
elementary (k-6th)
I have taught special education for grades kindergarten through 5th grade for 7 years. I mainly have worked in a resource room setting modifying regular education curriculum and finding new ways to meet childrens individualized needs through a variety of mediums and learning styles.
ESL/ESOL
I have taken several classes on teaching students with second language - mainly spanish. I have worked for 7 years now at Title 1 at risk schools where 85% of our population is ESL with good results. I have taken SIOP classes and several ESL related classes, plus I'm also trying to learn spanish myself so I can better relate and understand my students.
grammar
I have used and am familiar with various programs used to teach grammar skills to children. Many I have used and modified have been successful in teaching basic grammar to students. I have 7 years experience teaching students in grade K- 5.
phonics
I have worked for 7 years with students in grades Kindergarten through 5th. I have modified curriculums and adapted work to teach children with special needs. I am familiar with several phonics based programs and have several that I use and have had good results with. Phonics is general taught in the primary grades before 3rd. As is phonemic awareness.
special needs
I have worked in the field of special education for 16 years now 7 being specifically in teaching. I am currently a resource special education teacher for children in grades K-5. I have experience with children with learning disabilities, attention deficits, behavioral disabilites, developmental disabilities, multiple impairments and more significant disabilities. I have worked in many settings with children from pre school age to adults. I can modify and adapt curriculum to meet and fit children's needs, provide instruction to best meet their individualized needs and learning styles with measurable success. I enjoy learning and want to make it fun and enjoyable for all my students. Every child I have worked with has shown progress over the school year. Some as much a 2 years growth in reading and math.
study skills
Throughout my 7 years teaching, testing and accountability have grown significantly in our school. Students are basically over tested. I have had to teach study skills as well as test taking strategies to children in grades 2-5. As a result children I've worked with feel more relaxed, at ease prepared and confident when going in to test. They can rationablize what answers are not good choices and can basically narrow things down into less choices giving them a better chance at finding the correct answer. They learn to move on once the correct answer is found and look for KEY words that will help them solve problems. I also have helped several children learn to organize themselves, keep materials in order and study for things more effectively.
