About
Christine: |
|
Thanks for looking at my profile! I am a student teacher (which means I am practicing teaching so I can teach in a public school), and my specialty is learning strategies. I can teach (and have experience teaching) math, reading, writing, English, social studies, and science. In addition I would be glad to help anyone trying to get a better ACT or SAT score. I've taken many standardized tests including the ACT and SAT, and I would be happy to share my tips and help you practice!
Feel free to look at my resume for more detailed experiences, but I really hope that you will contact me so that we can discuss a plan for reaching your goals! |

Christine's Experience:
ACT
|
I would like to be certified to teach ACT prep. I am a pre-service teacher who will student teaching during the next year. As such I have been trained in all subjects, and I am required to teach in a way so that I prepare my students for taking these tests. I have several resources on test-taking strategies that I have used in the past for my own students.
In addition, I have experience with the ACT myself. I took the ACT twice in high school, recieving a score of 25 both times (30 English, 20 Math; and 28 English, 22 Math respectively). I also took test preparation courses through my school which taught me many strategies that are useful to people taking the ACT.
As a ACT tutor, I would help students learn the rules for each section of the test, strategies to help them pick answers for the test, development and review of practical skills needed on the test, and of course practice using sample tests.

elementary (k-6th)
|
I would like to be certified to work with elementary students k-6th grade. I am a pre-service teacher and I am about to start my year long student teaching assignment in the fall. I have much experience working with students from preschool to high school.
Some of my experience follows:
My senior year of high school I served as a teacher's assistant for a 3rd grade class 2 hours a day five days a week.
My senior year I served as an assistant for 4-6th graders learning musical instruments two hours a day three days a week.
My sophomore year of college I served as a volunteer in a preschool classroom for 1.5 hours two days a week.
My junior year I served as a tutor for a 5th grade student in literacy and writing skills under the supervision of a university professor.
In addition, I have had a year of coursework in literacy development for K-6 students. I have also passed the Illinois Certification System Tests 110 (Elementary/Middle Grades) and 104 (Aptitude for Professional Teaching Grades K-12)

special needs
|
I am currently a pre-service special education teacher. I will be starting my year-long student teaching experience in the fall. My area of study is the LBS1 program (Learning and Behavior Specialist). My coursework has taught me how to work with a variety of disabilities including developmental disabilities, physical disabilities, behavior disorders, and learning disabilities.
My most recent experience was doing my junior practicum with 8th grade students who had learning disabilities. In addition we had one student in our class who had autism. I planned and implemented instruction in social studies, math, language arts, earth science and writing. Beyond teaching the content I had to accomodate each student's specific disabilities and implement behavior plans according to their IEPs (Individualized Educational Plans).
I have also had experiences working with students who have autism, attention deficit disorder, physical needs, and speech/language disorders.
I think I would make a good tutor for students with special needs because I have the experience and understanding to bridge what they are learning at school to the tutoring environment. I am a specialist at coming up with strategies and instruction tailored to their specific needs. I also have a great deal of experience communicating with parents and educators to help determine their vision and priorities for their student.

study skills
|
I would like to be certified in study skills. I am currently a pre-service special education teacher. I will be doing my year-long student teaching experience starting this fall.
When I graduate I will be classified as a Learning and Behavior Specialist 1. To recieve that certification I have to learn a variety of strategies and study skills in order to help my students with disabilities succeed in school. The strategies I learn can help all learners, regardless of whether they have a disability. My university has prepared me well by teaching me numerous study skills strategies, but also teaching me the skills to come up with new strategies based on a student's needs.
I have taken specific coursework in helping students with strategies to help them in reading and writing. Beyond that I have also taken coursework to help them use study skills in more applied content subjects (like math, social studies, and science). I also have a variety of test taking strategies that I use often with students.
Philosophy with study skills are to improve comprehension and long-term memory of material. I also believe that the best way to teach study skills to to help students learn strategies that work on their own. After all, a teacher won't always be around, but we will always have new information that we will have to process and learn.
