I am a recent college graduate from Southern Arkansas University, where I double majored in Spanish with a minor in General Business and Business Administration with an emphasis in Computer Information Systems. While in college, I was a employed through college work study as a Spanish tutor. I also worked for 3 1/2 years as a teacher's assistant/student worker for one of the Spanish professors, where she only spoke Spanish in my presence (at my request) so that I could become more comfortable speaking the language. When my professor could not make it to class, I would take over the duty of teaching her classes. I helped edit and translate from Spanish to English a book of short stories titled "Cuéntanos un cuento abuelita". Also, I was recently inducted into Sigma Delta Pi, the honorary Spanish Honor Society. During the Summer of 2007, I attended The Center for Multicultural and Bilingual Studies in Cuernavaca, Morelos, Mexico. While in Mexico, I took several classes on Spanish culture and civilization and grammar. I lived with a host family and interacted with them daily, i.e., speaking Spanish at the dinner table and watching movies and listening to music in Spanish. Because I was in Mexico, I had to use the language daily, from conversing with my "family" to taking a taxi to ordering food from a restaurant. I also took several excursions to visit historical sites of Mexico such as the pyramids of Teotihuacan and the house of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo. In addition to Spanish, I am currently learning how to speak Chinese (Mandarin) and have taken 2 beginner's classes. |
