About
Mairead: |
|
Hi, I'm Mairead. My educational background includes a B.A. in English and African Studies from St. Mary's of MD and a MAT from Johns Hopkins University.
I teach high school English in Baltimore City. In addition, I very much enjoyed working with both adult and middle-school English Language Learners and middle school inclusion (primarily students with autism). While in college, I worked with homeschooled students, focusing on their core and creative writing skills.
Tutoring should be an enriching experience. For struggling students, it provides a chance to work on skills and gain confidence in the subject, as well as making it more manageable and fun. The tutoring environment I create is low-pressure, focusing on effort, core skills, and thought processes as a gateway to "correct" answers. With the one-on-one setting, students can really shine, since they are less afraid of being wrong.
For students seeking additional challenges, tutoring provides a wonderful opportunity to go beyond the curriculum and broaden the student's horizons, showing them how cool and exciting literature and language can be!
My strategies focus on using high-interest materials and student-centered activities to help students gain confidence and excitement. I use multiple intelligence theory to craft my lessons, so your student will aquire the information in the way that they best enjoy and understand. (This also helps prevent many of the frustrations/boredoms of the general classroom!)
I'm looking forward to working with your student! |

Mairead's Experience:
grammar
|
Since I teach high school English, my job involves preparing my sudents for the HSA's grammar questions. In addition, I focus on practical grammar, emphasizing the role of grammar in papers in order to clarify the meaning.
Throughout high school and college, I proofread my friends' papers, providing on-the-spot tutoring for frequent errors. I am happy to work with students in anything from paper writing, providing assistance in from the pre-writing to the editing process, to giving a crash course in tricky grammar rules.

proofreading
|
As an English teacher, I spend a lot of time reading and editing essays. However, I prefer to make the process interactive, since it is very boring to sit and watch someone read your paper.
I use strategies such as scanning the paper for common mistakes, pointing out an example of the mistake, and then reading through the paper with the student so that they can find and correct the others. This way, the student gains the knowledge necessary to avoid the problem next time!
The world smiles on those who can manufacture well-written pieces, from business grants and resumes to college essays and papers. Therefore, I want to help you produce the best work possible this time and help you hone your skills for the next project.
