About
Anne: |
I love books, writing, and teaching! I'm a 26 year-old Harvard graduate student living in Boston's Back Bay. I'm available for tutoring in a variety of subjects for students across a wide range of academic levels--elementary to graduate school. The subjects with which I have the most experience are English and world literature (including grammar, college application essays, research skills, poetry, etc), religion/theology, standardized testing (SAT and LSAT), and history. If you need help with a college application personal statement or with an undergraduate/graduate paper, I can definitely help you! If you're trying to get through Dante or Chaucer, I can definitely help you with that too! If you need a crash course in academic paper-writing, "Poetry for Physicists," or critical theory, I can definitely do that as well!
During high school, I tutored third and fourth graders in reading and math and worked as a teaching assistant in a middle school computer lab. For college, I attended Wellesley, where I majored in English literature and graduated with school and departmental honors. I'm currently a graduate student in Comparative Religious Studies at Harvard, where I focus on medieval and comparative literature. While I've been in school, I have gained experience teaching and tutoring college and graduate students. In addition to teaching a sophomore-level English composition course at a local college, I have also tutored a disabled law student at BC Law, edited papers and presentations by both undergraduates and professors, and helped high schoolers with college application materials (essays, resumes, etc). In addition to having experience in academic environments, I've also spent many summers teaching at camps; "subjects" included art, journalism, creative writing, summer reading, and gymnastics. Whatever your age or academic level, I'd be happy to work with you!
I enjoy working one-on-one with students and helping to improve their analytical and writing skills, while also making the experience as fun and as useful as possible for them. If you would like a tutor in any of my expertise areas, please contact me. My schedule is flexible, especially during the summer months. I'd be happy to come to your home or to hold tutoring sessions at a library or cafe near your home, school, or workplace. I look forward to meeting you!

Anne's Experience:
grammar
|
My experience with grammar is extensive and varied. I've taught a college-level English composition course in which I gave my students grammar quizzes and for which I frequently devised homework or in-class assignments based on common trouble areas. I've also been the editor of yearbooks, student magazines, and academic articles--including one article where I had to "translate" a professor's vocabulary and grammar from British-English to US-English! I have experience proofreading college application personal statements and academic papers as well as with teaching grammar basics.

proofreading
|
As a graduate student in the humanities and as a research assistant for professors, I'm well-trained in proofreading and editing. My previous assignments include the editing of law journal articles, literary journal articles, college application essays, law school research papers, and undergraduate writing assignments. In addition to being able to proofread for grammar, fact-checking, structure, and argumentation, I'm also familiar with various citation methods (including MLA, Chicago, and Blue Book).
My proofreading and editorial experience isn't limited to academic papers, as I've also served as the editor-in-chief of a yearbook and a literary-news magazine.
I'd be happy to work with students on any writing assignment, big or small, at any stage of its creation.

special needs
|
A couple years ago, I tutored a BC law student with cereberal palsy and it was one of my favorite jobs ever. I worked with him an average of 35 hours per week and was responsible for many tasks including completing his readings with him, reviewing for and taking his exams with him, performing the manual aspects of paper-writing and case-briefing, e-mailing his professors, attending his law firm internship with him, and helping him with research. This student is wheelchair-bound, has limited muscle control in his arms and legs, is legally blind, and has ADD/focus issues. I am patient, creative, and happy to work with students with learning and/or physical disabilities.
