 About Hannah:
I was an English tutor for three years while in college and am currently completing my second year of teaching. I have experience teaching standard high school English classes along with Creative Writing. I endeavor to make my lessons creative and relative to the students' lives because they will better be able to understand material that relates to what they already know. Writing is a very important aspect of each of my courses. We focus on in-depth analyses, evident critical thinking skills, relevant textual quotes, and proper MLA (citation) format. When I tutor students in writing, I encourage them to read their essay aloud while I follow along with a second copy. This improves the student's reading and comprehension skills while allowing them to slow down and actually listen to what they wrote. I then constructively critique the student's paper with him/her focusing on not only grammatical elements but also structure, content, syntax, flow, depth, and organization. I thoroughly explain every suggestion I make and encourage the student to begin to make corrections on his/her own. It is very important that the student understand why the corrections are necessary, so that he/she is then able to implement the skills into his/her writing. The students I tutored have repeatedly commented that I am very personable and adept at explaining complicated ideas in a comprehensive and easy-to-understand way. In my English classes, I consistently encourage my students to stay after and work with me so that they get the necessary one on one attention. When reading class texts, I thoroughly explain literary elements (Examples: Paradox, metaphor, simile, alliteration, allegory, theme, mood, tone, etc) while encouraging them to make in-depth analyses. I consistently endeavor to make my English classes and tutorial sessions accessible, comprehensive, interactive, and enjoyable. I have a passion for English and strive to convey that to each of my students so that they are able to take the skills I pass on to them and apply them to all aspects of their lives.

Learn More About Hannah's Experience:
grammar
As an English major in college and self-proclaimed grammar stickler, I am quite adept at correctly punctuating and organizing sentences. When I tutored in college, I would point out grammatical mistakes to the students and thoroughly explain the rules and reasoning behind them. I never simply corrected the mistakes and, instead, always strove to teach them how to correctly punctuate on their own. In addition, I currently teach high school English and consistently teach my students grammar rules and encourage proofreading in their papers. As my students read, I point out the grammatical elements and encourage them to apply them to their own writing. Finally, my students continually peer critique their papers in order to develop their own writing and revision skills.
proofreading
When I tutored English for three years in college, I consistently strove to teach my students how to proofread their own essays instead of simply making the corrections for them. I always explained the logic behind the criticism and encouraged my students to take that new knowledge and apply it to the rest of the essay. I wold limit my focus to one aspect of the essay and consistently teach the student how to correct the mistakes and prevent making them in the future. My students always read their essays aloud while I followed along a separate copy. This taught them to listen to how their essays sounded and make corrections on their own. In my classroom, my students always write rough drafts and bring them in to have a peer critique them. This teaches them how to proofread other students' essays and gives them the opportunity to receive feedback on their own. I encourage my students to strive for excellence in their writing, and proofreading is a necessary part of the process.
