About Kathryn:

I recently graduated from the California Institute of the Arts where I received my Bachelors degree in piano performance. Prior to that I attended the Orange County High School of the Arts where I also majored in piano performance. I've studied music theory, music history, ear training, composition and new music extensively but also have experience with world music, jazz and improvisation. I have been teaching piano for five years and during that time I've taught group piano classes as well as private lessons. My goal in teaching is not only to help students become more proficient at piano but also to inspire them to use music as an outlet for their own creative ideas.

More On Kathryn's Subjects:

  • ear training

During my time at the Orange County High School of the Arts and also at the California Institute of the Arts I've worked on ear training extensively. I've studied dictation, sight singing, interval identification, and chord identification. I've made use of my ear training skills in performing and improvising . I've also taught ear training to beginning piano students.

  • general music

I've been studying music for 12 years. My primary instrument has been piano but I've also studied and performed on percussion, guitar, electric bass and flute. I graduated from the Orange County High School of the Arts where I studied music theory, music history, conducting, composition, piano literature, notation, recording, jazz, pedagogy, and piano performance practices for four years. From there I earned my Bachelors degree from the California Institute of the Arts where I received further training in music theory and history, composition, new music, world music and piano. I've performed extensively solo and ensemble works in different styles (classical, jazz, rock, contemporary, world music) and on a number of different instruments. I've also worked with composers such as Michael Pisaro, Michael Finnissy, Art Jarvinen and Eva-Maria Houben.

  • music theory

While at the Orange County High School of the Arts and then the California Institute of the Arts I studied music theory extensively. I have an advanced knowledge of counterpoint, four part writting and 20th and 21st century music theory. I've taught music theory in group classes and in private lessons.

  • piano

I have been playing piano for 12 years. I've studied and performed classical, jazz and rock pieces for ensemble and solo piano. I graduated from the Orange County High School of the Arts where I majored in piano performance. While there I performed almost weekly in jazz combos, big bands and solo piano recitals. From there I attended the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) where I again majored in piano performance. At CalArts I put on three major recitals of mostly solo piano works and also performed frequently in other concerts. I have experience working directly with composers on their pieces and have had a few pieces composed for me. I've attended and performed in numerous music festivals including the Interlochen Summer Arts Camp, Summer Institute for Contemporary Performance Practice, Beverly Hills International Chamber Music Festival, and the International Chamber Music Courses and Festival in Positano, Italy. I have studied piano with Steven Cook, Ming Tsu, Vicki Ray, and Liam Viney.

Student Feedback:

  • Kids love Kathryn

Kathryn arrives for her sessions promptly and is very professional and courteous. She is extremely patient with our young girls and has them focused and excited about their lessons. She relates well to the girls and uses props to help them understand concepts. In the first two lessons the girls already understand how to sit properly, recognize keys, finger positions, rhythm, and playing basic melodies. The girls love her and anticipate each new lesson with energy and excitement even after their long day at school. We are very pleased with Kathryn and recommend her highly.
