About
Shalina: |
I have experience teaching children of all ages, ranging from Pre-school to High School as well as tutoring Adults during my attendance at American River College. My most common tutoring has been with Middle School, High School and College Students needing help in Pre-Algebra, Algebra I and Algebra II. I had a couple great professors when I attended these courses and am dedicated to help others understand these principles better. I am greatly satisfied when my tutee's grades increase even all the way to an A.
I also have experience tutoring children in Elementary Mathematics and use different techniques to accommodate their own learning style of which there are four. Sometimes it takes more than a lecture in the classroom, but one-on-one instruction to clarify concepts and offer different strategies for processing problems.
I was also a teacher’s assistant for various Middle Schools and High Schools throughout Sacramento County for excelling students in Math, Science and Core classes through the MESA and AVID programs. I not only tutored these students in various subjects but helped them increase their grades through better study skills and organization.
I hope you choose to contact me for your tutoring needs. I will do all that I can to help you or your child understand to the fullest extent possible the principles being set before them in your/their coursework, as well as, how to apply the knowledge successfully in homework and on exams.

Shalina's Experience:
elementary (k-6th)
|
I currently tutor Elementary school students in basic mathematical precepts and comprehension. A primary cause of math difficulties is an inability to image and verbalize the concepts underlying math processes. Individuals attempt to memorize facts instead of being able to think, reason, and problem solve with numbers. I aim to successfully stimulate the ability to image and verbalize the concepts underlying math processes. Concept imagery is applied to math computation and problem solving. I emphasize both mathematical resaoning and mathematical computation, while keeping the children interested with fun tasks.

GED
|
I understand why it is so important to pass the GED and how for some, finishing High School is not an option. I also understand how difficult a task it must seem. I personally passed the GED Exam, while teaching myself the knowledge required in order to do so and on the first attempt. I aim to teach you the same precepts I used in order to successfully earn my GED on the first try with a minimal amount of time, and not reviewing all material we learned in our previous instruction in Secondary School.

proofreading
|
I officially have a Clerk Certification from fifteen years earlier, where I learned the benefits of proofreading. Since then I have used this skill in my college and professional careers. It is very important in our High-tech World to write adequately. Our writing gives the impression of who we are, how capable we are, and how interested or invested we are in the task at hand. In college it is most important to the grade we will earn. Please contact me for any help you need in proofreading, as I have a very detailed and trained eye. I can also teach you how to proofread your own scripts to make a great impression on the reader.

statistics
|
I received top scores in all my Statistics courses. I have a fundamental understanding of Behavioral Statistics and its applications. I hope to help you understand Statistical precepts as well as its use in your specific discipline.

study skills
|
I had the pleasure of working with the Sacramento County Department of Education's AVID program. AVID stands for Advancement via Individual Determination. AVID is designed to help underachieving students prepare for and succeed in colleges and universities. I was trained in instruction of academic “survival skills” and college level entry skills. I have taught many students how to study, read for content, take notes, and manage time. It is my aim to bring you to a higher level of understanding and achievement in your academic career.
