About

Hello,
I've been teaching and tutoring since 1969--taking fifteen years to own and operate a successful photography studio. During that time span I have taught, and, or, tutored, all elementary school subjects, English (grammar and creative writing), study and organization skills, PSAT and SAT preparation, Civil Service exam preparation, public speaking, professional acting (and private audition coaching), and horsemanship (ground schooling and western riding). And, no, I'm not 126 years old...Getting there though.

Hello,
I taught, tutored, and substitute taught elementary school levels for better than twelve years (nine of those years were spent as a full-time teacher in grades 4 through 8) in both Los Angeles and New York. I also taught grammar and creative writing in an after school enrichment center for an additional five years. I've been a year-book moderator, Student Council moderator, football and basketball coach. I currently tutor elementary school age students, both privately, as well as through the NCLB(No Child Left Behind) program...Hope to speak to you (and work with you) soon.
Sincerely,
Paul Bovino

You might want to read one or both of the books I wrote and had published in 2006 and 2007. But then, I'm not here to promote my books, but to indicate that grammar, writing, and language (they are actually all one, you know. I don't really know why we categorize them. Maybe it employs more teachers?) are an integral part of who I am. I taught grammar, creative writing, and all language areas of PSAT and SAT preparation, for five years in an after school enrichment center for advanced students. I'm a certificated graduate member of the Longridge Writers Group--one of the most highly touted professional writing programs in the country.
Enhanced grammar comes primarily from reading and writing. And, if you're not crazy about doing either one, you will be after you work with me for a while.
The best to you,
Paul Bovino

Hello,
My own horse's name is Spirit. She's an Arabian mare that I "cut my teeth" on as a horsemanship trainer and western riding coach some fifteen years ago. I teach private one-on-one lessons in ground training, communication, and riding (free style, under saddle, and bareback). I also train and exercise virtually all breeds from the western perspective. However, you must own your own horse (I won't train anyone who's looking to be able to go out on a rental horse on occasion), be at least twelve years old (unless you're somewhat tall, athletic, and confident for your age).
If you (or your parents) are familiar wih the techniques of Pat Parelli and a ground schooler by the name of Bob Dickinson, you'll have a better idea of my philosophy and approach. It's something that can be taught to anyone who genuinely wants to learn about horses, and, more specifically of course, about their own horse. It's something that will have you seeing your horse as a partner (and vice versa), and not just something to saddle up and ride. Whether you have many years of riding experience (some of my clients have been riding and even eventing for from fifteen to as much as forty years) or are a complete novice, you'll benefit greatly from this approach--and so will your horse.
Sincerely,
Paul Bovino

Hello,
In spite of many years of teaching experience in several other fields and subjects, the one that I have made the bulk of my living at is photography. Many years ago I trained under such master craftsmen as Joe Zeltsman, Sherman Hines, Rocky Gunn, Leon Kennemar, Mort Sobin, and many others. After four or five years of working for three of the top portrait studios in the Los Angeles area, I operated a very successful home studio for fifteen years, specializing in portraits, publcity, and weddings. In weddings alone I've photographed easily a thousand (The basis for my book, now in publication, 'The Wedding According to Paul'). Although I still do the occasional wedding or bar mitzvah, in recent years I've found myself more dedicated to building a collection of stock photos with "The Horse" as a central theme.
If you'd like me to work with you, than know that you will be working with your camera manually, and learning about the relationships between f-stop, shutter speed and light as it pertains to film. If you have a wrking understanding of that, then digital is a piece of cake. I will also emphasize basics with respect to portrait posing and lighting, and picture (frame) composition--with particular attention to elements in a photograph that draw the eye, as well as those that distract, and repel the eye.
Your tools will be one digital and one film SLR. If you only have one and not the other, don't worry about it. I have you covered. As far as lighting equipment, I have that covered as well.
...Hope to hear from you,
Paul Bovino

Hello,
Overlapping a career in photography, I did a considerable amount of acting in/on stage, film, and television. I studied for eighteen months with Estelle Harman in Hollywood, and was with the Actors Studio LA for two years, studying with, primarily, Shelly Winters, as well as a few others.
The Directors strike of the late eighties put a hold on what had been a rising and promising acting career. At that time, my work was being noticed by another member of the Actors Studio. Due to her somewhat high profile, and respecting the fact that she may prefer not to be mentioned here, I won't give her name. However, in addition to her acting status, she also has one of the more prominent acting and cold reading workshops in Los Angeles, and she asked me to come and work with her. For the next year we split the group of students into two. I was given the "professionals," and my now associate took the beginners. I also taught cold reading privately.
After a "parting of the ways" I continued giving private lessons in cold reading, and to teach a small acting group of five students in my home in Encino California, before moving into the northern foothills of the San Fernando Valley.
Although I don't actively pursue acting professionally any longer, I still keep the juices flowing by doing a play or TV role every few years and helping an actor with lines and/or "choices."
My specialty as a coach was always the cold reading. If an actor can "get to it" in a few hours, or even a few minutes time, then he/she can
act. Actors must also learn how to do those one, two, and three line entry level roles. So many acting instructors place far too much emphasis on scene study. No one gets called in for major roles unless they're a child prodigy. The majority of actors have to work from the trenches--those trenches being the small roles that many others don't care about or train for. Without neglecting scene study, I'll coach you on how to approach those smaller roles.
Break a leg,
(I'll even tell you where that expression came from)
