I specialize in the tutoring of French-- with an emphasis on the areas of grammar, reading, writing, pronunciation, and conversation.
Lessons will be tailored to the individual, whether she is a soon-to-be business associate in Nice or a high school freshman struggling through the subjunctive.
EDUCATION BACKGROUND:
I recently graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with a Bachelor of Arts degree in philosophy. While there, I won several departmental awards and consistently maintained an excellent grade-point average.
For ten years, I was educated in all aspects of the French language, beginning at the age of nine. At my home university, I took courses in French literature, reading & writing, phonetics, grammar & style, and oral communication.
My education culminated just last year, when I studied contemporary French history, cinema, philosophy, anthropology, and art, in Paris. There, I was enrolled in these courses, all taught in French, at distinguished universities like Paris I and the Institut Catholique.
TUTORING EXPERIENCE:
I have tutored French privately at Marist High School during my junior and senior years there (2002-2004); 2003 was the same year I tutored a junior high-age student in algebra, and his mother is still my main reference.
At the university level, I tutored students in elementary logic as a member of the philosophy honors society (2005-2008). Finally, this summer, I have the honor of a teaching assistant position with Johns Hopkins University's Center for Talented Youth Summer Programs (2008).
TEACHING STYLE:
My focus will depend largely on the needs of my clients. However, the acquisition of a solid foundation of grammar and accurate pronunciation will be paramount.
Expect interactive lessons: going through written exercises together, reading short passages together, quick writing assignments, informal conversations, and clips from Francophone films.
Lessons will be weighted more towards learning to ask mundane questions, give directions, describe yourself, tell stories, and so on.
So expect to learn quite a few indispensable everyday expressions that are, unfortunately, not reliably taught in high school French classes. Expect, in short, to learn a lot of vocabulary, in a very short time.
