About
Jeffrey: |
Greetings and salutations!
I carry a great love for expression and communication, a love realized through the study and application of the English language. My Bachelor's degree is a subject-specific English degree; while I graduated with a respectable 3.0, my GPA as an adult student returning to the university was 3.75. Allow me the opportunity to elaborate.
I was an average student in high school, and I can certainly relate to students who are not yet realizing their potential. While I excelled in my English classes and found myself placed in other honors courses, I had not yet learned how to learn, as it were. I did not apply myself well in many subjects, and that pattern carried into my early collegiate career. I left the university, sans degree, at the age of twenty-one. There's a life lesson in this, so please bear with me.
I struggled through my twenties with a multitude of low-paying jobs, occasionally taking college courses along the way. In 2005, at the age of 35, I made a dedicated push to achieve my degree. I returned to school full time and lived on campus as a Resident Assistant. It was a fantastic year, and my cumulative GPA for those two semesters was a 3.75. It took some time, but I learned how to learn. I am now enrolled in graduate courses for secondary school teaching certification with a cumulative GPA of 4.0.
As I also hold a minor in Theater, I am happy to provide assistance with the dramatic arts as well.
I have completed a semester of student teaching at a prestigious preparatory school in Anaheim, California. I also have experience coordinating a teen program for the YMCA and running various clinics for a YMCA summer camp. The poetry clinic was easily my favorite, though leading the beaver dam hikes was also fantastic. The joie de vivre I experienced as a guide is worth mentioning even if most students are not looking for information on beaver dams. Worry not; I can provide SAT prep as well.
My teaching style is progressive, informed by my life experience and my current certification courses. I place a strong emphasis on enjoyment, as I believe it to be of great importance that a student works and learns for the joy of it. That will later translate to a career, and a life, that the student will find rich and fulfilling.
Tutoring also gives me the opportunity to tailor my teaching to the individual needs of a student, and I am versed in a variety of teaching styles. I look forward to working and learning with you. |

religion
|
The study of religion is vital today, be it part of a journey in self-discovery, spirituality, or a greater understanding of the roles religion plays in various cultures throughout our world. My collegiate study of Christianity and Buddhism are an asset, but the majority of my knowledge and experience in this sphere comes of the independent study I have undertaken for the last twenty years. My strengths are ancient religion and myth as well as modern Christianity and Buddhism in their various forms, though I can also provide assistance to the neophyte with regard to many other religions.
