 About Victor:
Hi there! My name is Victor Reeser. Nearing the end of my undergraduate career, I have made plans to teach English in Japan for a few years in order to better understand where I see myself fitting into the job market over there in the future. I would like to get some experience tutoring and teaching to help prepare me for my career plans.
I am currently enrolled for my senior year at Willamette University. I am majoring in Japanese Studies and minoring in Film Studies. With Willamette being a liberal arts college, I have a varied educational background covering everything from East Asian literature and world history to calculus. I attended college preparatory high school and took honors classes throughout. As such, I have studied literature from all over the world and have an excellent general education on the collegiate level.
I am the eldest of three children and the son of an English teacher, and I have much experience helping people younger than myself better understand a varied amount of subject matter on their own terms. I have some experience tutoring English as a second language for Japanese students but only as a volunteer.
I have studied mathematics and am competent in any area from prealgebra to differential and integral calculus.
I am nearly fluent in Japanese and have studied for over five years now. I am an advanced student of the language and lived in Japan comfortably as an international student last year for four months relying on my Japanese abilities.
I have been an active member of the theater community since the age of nine. I have been a part of over twenty productions and have experience with Shakespeare, musical theater, and sketch comedy, and student-produced works. I have experience writing, directing and acting and always enjoy the opportunity to entertain others.
I have been a fan of football since childhood and played all the way through high school. Although I chose academics in college I have knowledge of the fundamentals of every position and was on a state championship team my junior year of high school.
I am a firm believer in the Socratic method of teaching. This involves open discussion with the students as well as a growing lesson plan to cater to their learning style and needs. In my time as a student I have found it easier to learn when the teacher takes the thoughts and ideas of the students into consideration when creating assignments. This is the method I use.

football
Sports have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember and since the first time I saw the Super Bowl I have been in love with the game of American football. I started playing as soon as I was old enough to enter middle school and played the game throughout high school. When it came time to apply to colleges I realized that I was not physically big enough to pursue the game any further and I chose academics over athletics. When it comes to the fundamentals I am confident in my ability to coach every position on the team. Being of a larger stature, I am most excelled at the positions of the linemen. I have experience with a different number of offensive and defensive formations and plays. I have knowledge of many training regimens that are position-specific. It is important for any player on any team to train the body. Conditioning is crucial to victory. In most cases, if you can outlast your opponent you can claim victory. I realize the importance of any team is a solid leadership and good chemistry. My high school’s motto was “We Are One”, and it was with this mentality that my team won the state championship my junior year of high school with an undefeated season. Nothing is more important to a team than teamwork. This is optimally achieved when a team can overcome a series of obstacles together and find strength and support in one another. If this happens the strength of a team is much greater than that of a random grouping of people no matter how skilled the individuals are. Although my time as a player has passed football has never stopped being a part of my life. I have found many ways to stay an active participant in the game. I take part in fantasy drafts every year and keep an eye on professional football every season. My favorite team is the Green Bay Packers and my favorite player is the legendary quarterback Brett Favre.
Japanese
Being a Japanese Studies major, my language abilities are crucial to my career success and have been something I have spent much time and effort working on. I am able to converse freely in Japanese. I have been an avid fan of Japanese culture since childhood, and that naturally led to me to study the language in high school. I studied Japanese for two years in high school, and then went on to study at the collegiate level for three more years. I spent four months last year in a home stay exchange program living in the Tokyo area. During this time I increased my abilities to near-fluency. Having used it on a daily basis for the last three years I am proficient in nearly all forms of grammar and enough vocabulary to live independently and sufficiently in Japan. I also have multiple texts and resources I have accumulated to further my studies independently. I only have around seven hundred of the complex characters known as kanji memorized, but it is something any individual who studies Japanese knows to be a continual uphill struggle. Many Japanese themselves are confined to only the kanji they use on a daily basis. Truly my favorite subject of study, not a day goes by where I don’t study and use Japanese in some way, shape or form. I have helped both peers and other students throughout my own studies and am well versed in helping others learn and understand Japanese.
