More On Noah's Subjects:

  • composition (music)

I took composition lessons with Judah Adashi at the Preparatory branch of the Peabody Conservatory. I have also studied with Louis Karchin and Felipe Lara at New York University. I have written pieces for solo piano, solo cello, and songs for voice and piano. Additionally, I have an advanced music theory background, with training in theoretical concepts from the rennaissance up to the present day.

  • ear training

My piano teacher encouraged me to partake in ear training from a young age. Very early on I learned intervals and began to listen to music in a different way, paying attention to the structure of the compositions. Additionally, I have been singing in choirs for many years and sight reading at the piano as well, both of which have significantly enhanced my sense of pitch. I can teach students the skills to develop an accurate ear for pitch.

  • general music

Given my diverse background, in piano, music theory, and music history, I can provide comprehensive classical music lessons to students. I understand that part of becoming a good musician is having a diverse background within music, and the combination of approaches I have experienced and achieved in at a high level attests to this. At Peabody I received training in piano, theory, and composition, and at NYU I continued these studies, with the addition of pedagogical training.

  • music history

At NYU I have studied the history of 20th century music, and I have also played in contemporary music ensembles in New York City. Additionally, I have studied the works of all periods of composition in my piano and choral studies, and I can securely teach the fundamentals of music history to students. I also understand that learning music history is not isolated to learning names and dates--one must actually listen to and attempt to understand the music. Listening and analyzing music would have a high priority in my lessons.

  • music theory

I have studied theory through the most advanced courses offered at New York University, in addition to courses taken at the Peabody Conservatory. I have a thorough understanding of four part writing, voice leading, harmony, atonality, the 12 tone system, and more advanced 20th century approaches to music composition. Given my avid interest in 20th century music, these latter skills are particularly developed.

  • piano

I studied piano at the Peabody Conservatory under Dr. Carol Prochazka and at New York University with Dr. Jose Mendez. I won the University of Maryland Baltimore County Concerto Competition and performed Mozart with the University Orchestra. I am currently studying piano intensively at NYU, performing the works of all major classical composers at a high level. In addition, I have unique experience with etudes, having taken part in an etude class at NYU, which involved my own pedagogical input to students studying the most technically difficult pieces.

  • sight singing

Since middle school I have been singing in choirs. Currently I am a bass-baritone with the New York City based choir Khorikos. We perform music of all periods and styles. I also have an accurate ear for intervals and harmony, and paired with my knowledge of vocal technique and the Alexander technique, I can train students in sight singing. I understand that the key to sight singing is listening to real music and following the interval content within it, so this is what I will focus on in my lessons.
