More Detail:
My method involves limited use of tablature or the G-clef. Introduction to these elements of guitar as only a platform for further self-study will be eventually included. Some theory is always involved in music. Theory, history; here's a little gem:
The Picardy third. Simply a contrast in the third interval of theoretically root chord voicing that is previously throughout the composition in a minor scale. It gives the composition a "light after dark" flavor or emotion. Example in popular music that I could provide or anybody with access to a library or computer could find and listen to is, "A Taste of Honey" recorded by the Beatles at the very last chord it goes from minor to major.
Other mathematical pieces of musical information contain a variety of chords and scales and modes. Multiplying 12 scales by 16 possible chords per scale, adding church modes and 12 corresponding relative minor scales gives a writer with writers block even, a huge array of tools at their disposal.
This is what a continuing student would have to look forward to. Rhythm patterns, all the elements of dynamics. Less is more.
Start small and stay small or grow it's up to the student for frequency and how big a piece of the pie you want to learn. Tom Petty gets away with 3 and 5 chord patterns and makes wonderful songs with his ensemble and layering. Another aspect: duets or trios or onward to ensembles.
The focus from short-range to long-range is essentually for beginners who either have previous unsuccessful training or for those who have never learned a thing yet and want to learn a more organic method. Thirty-three years of traveling through the musical maze of self-expression and interpreting existing music through my experience equipts me to teach for those who might appreciate a learn by ear method.
Back to basics: learning the neck 6th string open to 1st string 12th fret. Neck (fretboard)and chord
charts and charting. Hands on all the way. And, my guidance. Learn the outline of a song or how to express your own song through the guitar. Know thy guitar, know thyself! By charts, by recordings, listening, by most importantly enjoying, whatever your tastes or desires.
