About
Annabel: |
|
I am a writer and an autodidact who loves to learn, and to encourage the curiosity of others. I enjoy working closely with individuals based on their particular learning style and sets of interests and needs, and I can take both a more fluid and progressive or a more traditional and structured approach.
I attended a progressive charter school for high school, where in 11th grade I was granted an independent study to focus on completing a historical novel I had been working on, which, with other materials, including original art and work in the social history of disease, I submitted to successfully complete the year.
I began my undergraduate career at Smith College, where I focused on English, History, and Art History. I also received feedback on my fiction writing from Kurt Vonnegut, as he was writer in residence while I was at Smith.
After my first year I transferred to the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, where I earned a joint First Class MA (Honours) in History and History of Art. I wrote a final year thesis on medieval Islamic manuscript painting, which is now under consideration for publication by a peer-reviewed journal. Along with Islamic art I also studied the Italian and Northern Renaissance, Rembrandt, and Velazquez.
For the history side of my degree, I focused especially on nineteenth and twentieth century Russian history, including revolutionary history as well as literature (particularly Tolstoy and Dostoevsky).
Outside of the university context, I also have a broad knowledge of and interest in colonial New England history, as well as general American, British, and European history. I am also interested in science and philosophy. I have lived in three countries (the U.S., Scotland, and Mexico), and I love to travel, explore the world, and meet new people. |
