I'd like to take this opportunity to tell you a little bit about myself and my background. First of all, my name is Susie. In May 2006, I received my Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Missouri- Columbia. I majored in English with courses in composition, grammar, and literature. I am currently taking classes at Webster University to complete my Missouri State Teacher Certification, and I will continue my education by earning a Master of Arts in Teaching with an emphasis in Communication Arts.
While I continue to take classes, I am a substitute teacher for the Parkway School District. Because I attend classes at night, I have the opportunity to teach almost everyday in elementary, middle, and high schools within the district. I also have a wonderful opportunity to be a certified adult ESL instructor for the Parkway Adult Education and Literacy Program. For a few hours a week, I work with ESL students on grammar, reading, writing and conversation. I have learned the value of time management, organizational skills, responsibility, teamwork, and leadership because of my education and work experience. I have also learned the importance of flexibility and communication with classmates, colleagues, parents, and administrators because of my varying and sometimes hectic schedule. These are skills I want to pass on to my students so that they have the confidence to succeed in any situation.
I believe that it is important to give students a sense of personal accomplishment and a desire to keep learning, to provide students with a sense of everyday stability and discipline, and to help teach students about the importance of acceptance and respect, not only in classrooms, but in everyday life. I would enjoy the opportunity to work with students that need an extra "push!"
