About Stephanie:

I have been teaching students for about ten years now. Even more than my subject area and content, I love being around children and interacting with them. While I currently teach middle schoolers, I am comfortable with students of all ages. My greatest asset as a tutor would be that I constantly offer encouragement so the child does not get discouraged. I believe that building a child's confidence leads them a step closer to success and achievement.

More On Stephanie's Subjects:

  • elementary (k-6th)

In the past, I have taught six grade and am very comfortable with younger children. I have a daughter in elementary school so I know about the developmental processes with elementary age children. I enjoy all subject matter and love the innocence of younger children.

  • ESL/ESOL

My first teaching job entailed working with many students whose second language was English. I understand the need to celebrate one's native tongue while learning a new one. I am well aware of the fact that language is cultural, and I would respect that. My knowledge of grammar and writing are applicable to teaching ESL.

  • GED

About ten years ago, I tutored my own cousin who was in need of her GED. My experience as a high school teacher also lends itself beautifully to tutoring for the GED. I have a solid foundation in all subject areas, including math and science.

  • grammar

As a 7th grade language arts teacher, grammar instruction is an integral part of my curriculum. Every day students practice grammar skills on our "warm-up." I must a have a firm grasp of grammar rules because I teach them. I also grade student writing quite frequently. This, too, requires an editor's eye.

  • study skills

The foundation of study skills begins with organization. If any student is to be successful, organization must play a role. In addition, many students are not aware that they have a learning style that works best for them. Lastly, students must know how to study. These three precepts would drive my instruction of study skills.
