 About Lorelei:
I've just graduated from a selective liberal arts college with a double major in psychology and computer science, but I have a broad base of knowledge and skills, particularly analytical writing. In high school I volunteered as a tutor for middle school students in English and math. In college, I've worked as a computer science teaching assistant for 3 semesters, and I am good at making complicated concepts understandable. I once taught a small web design class and got very positive feedback from my students. I'm often asked by my friends to help them with computer science homework and statistics for psychology papers, because of my understanding of the subject matter and ability to explain clearly. Last fall I was inducted into Psi Chi, the national honor society in psychology, for my academic achievements. I believe it's important for students to reach essential insights on their own, and prefer to guide students to seeing an answer rather than giving it outright. I emphasize deep understanding and knowing how to find an answer over rote memorization, or giving answers useful only for specific problems. However, in cases where memorization is clearly necessary, for example studying for the psychology AP exam, I have a range of memory tricks that I have been using successfully for years, and that have been informed by my knowledge of cognitive psychology, which I can adapt to individual learning styles. I like to find connections between different domains of knowledge, and use examples from one field to understand another. I'm friendly and easy-going, but also firm about staying focused, and that students think independently to gain understanding.

Learn More About Lorelei's Experience:
html
I have been using HTML to create webpages for 8 years. I have created several personal sites for myself, and created web pages as part of computer science course. I taught a web design class that covered standards-compliant HTML and CSS and applying the principles of graphic design to the web. For the 2007-2008 school year I created and maintained a website for the Grinnell Psychology Student Educational Policy Committee.
statistics
I took AP statistics in high school and scored a 5 on the exam. As part of my psychology coursework in college I have have read and interpreted statistics-heavy research papers, designed experiments and described the statistical analysis to be used, and conducted a semester-long psychology experiment, including statistical analysis. My research methods course focused on applied statistics in psychology research: knowing what tests are appropriate for which situations and understanding the meaning of the underlying formulas.
