About
Helen: |
I have good English skills and I'm interested in working with others to help them improve theirs.
One of my proudest accomplishments was in helping my husband learn to understand English. When we first met he didn't have the confidence he needed to communicate effectively. It's been a liberating experience for him to be able to open up, gaining the courage to express his ideas in front of very large audiences. He's really enjoyed the many different contacts he's made, which have mellowed and expanded his point of view. His lack of understanding was an obstacle and a challenge.
Acculturation can take a long time working on it alone. I think my main influence was in acting as a springboard for answering his questions. Working together as an immediate resource allowed his comprehension to develop naturally. Now he's fully fluent and making a good living.
I'd like to help other people succeed at whatever level they're at.
I'm available to help anyone who's struggling to understand English, to help reveal the patterns within the rules, so as to clarify the logic. Basically to help people get through the hardest part, which is beginning. Just like learning any skill, from riding a bicycle to driving a stick shift, it's very confusing in the beginning.
The awkward mistakes can be discouraging, but given time and enough practice, anything can become second nature.
I want to help individuals develop patience in finding their own voice. Writing is a very personal process. Beginning to apply oneself can be the most difficult aspect of the challenge.
I recognize that developing one's ideas is an ongoing, lifelong process. There are many aspects in learning to think and communicate. It's not a lack of intelligence that prevents someone from getting their point across, or comprehending written material. It's more a matter of emotional engagement. Getting comfortable with the material, developing a sense of mastery, so that in any circumstance they can apply logic to break down and conquer any problem.
I want my students to understand that English, unlike math, can be forgiving. To show that whatever was wrong can be made right with a little bit of adjustment, which only takes a little bit of time, attention, and listening, as any game or art requires.
It's important to understand that the rules are there to serve the expression of ideas, not to hinder them. That the basics of grammar, spelling, punctuation, etc., were invented and refined for our convenience, not to impose meaningless frustration.
I want my students to gain the confidence they need to assert themselves, whenever it's necessary. So that they can feel proficient and comfortable, in facing and resolving the problems that arise throughout their lives. |
