elementary (k-6th) I have recently student taught in a 1st grade classroom, which prepared me to teach first grade subject areas. I also student taught in 6th grade classrooms, which required me to know subject material taught in 6th grade and all grades below. I have taken teacher certification tests to teach Middle Level math and Middle Level English (grades 7-9). In order to pass these tests, I had to be knowledgeable in subject matter up to and including grade 9. I had taken many elementary education classes during my undergraduate years at Pitt, and was considering becoming certified to teach elementary school. phonics I am a certified Special Education teacher. I have just finished my graduate level courses getting a masters degree in special education. Many of these classes focused on teaching reading to students. I know many strategies to teach reading, including phonics based practices. I have tutored a 6th grade student in reading and brought her from reading on a 4th grade level up to her actual grade level. study skills I have just recently student taught 6th special education. One of the classes that I taught to these students (and regular education students) was called Study Skills. In this class I taught students different study skills and strategies. Some of these strategies included (but were not limited to): comprehension tips, reading (decoding) assistance, taking notes, making outlines, test taking tips, and highlighting.
