My name is Joe Smith and I'm a husband, soon to be father, wannabe philosopher, and a "closet" geek. I am offering my services a tutor to anyone who would like some support and perspective on what they are trying to learn. I'm new to Wyzant and see myself working with middle or high-school aged students, but I'm open. If you would like more information about me, just read on.
In elementary school I was very artistic and imaginative. I moved around a lot being in a military family so I was able to adapt quickly to new social environments and schools. I was great at drawing and piano, but I wasn't that interested in sports until my dad started buying my slurpees for each goal I scored in my soccer games.
Through middle school and high school I developed my soccer skills (probably because of the recognition from my dad and my peers) and passed my classes with ease. My favorite subjects in middle-school were the "advanced" classes for the straight-A'ers where we built weird contraptions and learned what Central American people ate for lunch. In high-school I enjoyed geometry, algebra, and chemistry and I absolutely hated accounting. Biology was fun because I liked dissecting things.
In high school I was also a "star" athlete on the soccer team. The only four-year varsity player after my senior year, I had been the captain for two years, all conference, all state, top conference goal scorer, MVP etc. I also played on Colorado State's Olympic Development Team (ODP). I ran track and played basketball as well, just without any bragging rights.
I was also the assistant coach for the girls varsity team and a summer soccer coach during the off season for club and church sponsored soccer camps.
I did attend college: John Brown University on a soccer and academic scholarship. I studied engineering for the first year and then transfered to the University of Colorado at Boulder where I took up architectural engineering classes while being enrolled in the school of arts and sciences as a math major. In spite of the seemingly indirect approach to selecting a major, I ended up graduating in 2001 with an Economics & Business Admin degree from CU.
Since graduating from college I've been in sales and business development for a variety of different employed and self-employed businesses. From designing and installing custom cabinets, to real-estate sales, to custom audio visual systems, my current skill set lies in business development, marketing and outside sales.
I used to want to be the highest gross sales person; start my own company and be my own boss; do something that nobody else has done; make other people want to be like me, the model of success.
But over time I realized that no matter how hard you work, no matter how many hours you put into developing depth and breadth of your skill, still the majority of factors that determine the outcome of a situation are largely outside of your control. All you can do is create a plan, work your plan, and make sure that when opportunity presents itself you do not hesitate to reach out and take it.
Now although I must admit that I still would like to be the highest gross sales person and do something that nobody else has done, these desires are merely a part of my competitive spirit that make performance metrics fun. Performance metrics are not the goal.
The goal is to be in a state of consciousness every day where at any given moment I am prepared to be of maximum service to the people around me. This is a goal I have complete control over and that is completely aligned with the best interests of my clients, my co-workers, and our company. Even more importantly, this is a goal that at the end of the day I can take home to my wife and kids.
I have developed many skills in my experience as a professional sales person, but the best lesson I have learned is embodied in the following quote:
"For success, like happiness, cannot be persued; it must ensue, and it only does so as the unintended side-effect of one's dedication to a cause greater than one's self or as the by product of one's surrender to a person other than oneself. Happiness must happen, and the same holds for success; you have to let it happen by not caring about it." -Viktor E. Frankl
As a tutor, I feel like I can offer others a little perspective and support as they take on the task of learning something that I am already familiar with. From general mathematics, science, astronomy, economics, history, and music to spirituality and British football (which go hand in hand), I think for the right person I can help them succeed. |
