I've been involved in technologies of several types since elementary school over 30 years ago. I picked up an interest in solid state electronics while also learning the ins and outs of the photographer's darkroom.
In the Navy, I was rapidly selected from among others to engage in an experimental academic program. Consequently, I enjoyed a richer experience than others of my rate and worked on pneumatic/hydraulic computers on an aircraft carrier. Additionally, I was commonly found with a set of lenses and a nice Canon SLR hanging from my neck; I also established my own darkroom on the ship. Unlike many shipmates, instead of hitting the beach to party, I was out and about shooting pictures or back at my rack and studying the Ilford manual and other books on the subject.
There's some basic but real math behind all those pictures we take!
After leaving the service I quickly gained employment doing machinery maintenance and troubleshooting in a custom plastics molding and fab plant. I was responsible for work on everything from controls of all types - relay logic, PLC, hybrid solid-state, pneumatics, hydraulics, etc. to general mechanical repair.
A few years later I was hired away by a Fortune 500 company as a maintenance supervisor. In addition to my regular responsibilities, I also wrote several pieces of software to help solve various issues at the plant. I left after declining a position as micro-computer coordinator for the automotive group. They were just a little too bent on spreadsheets for my tastes (1985, little did they realize...).
I have been largely self-employed for the past 20 years.
I have been interested in education my entire life. I am constantly teaching myself new things as my industry - information technology - demands unending change to stay current, let alone to move forward.
I have oft been complimented on my communication skills and especially my ability to impart new information in ways that less technically adept people can clearly understand. I have successfully coached others through their college years, in particular, regarding computing skills.
My style is rather easy-going, I'll try to determine the level at which you currently work in different areas so that my vocabulary respects that - of course, I'm always looking to adjust that. I think you'll find that I can break complex concepts down to their fundamental cores. In fact, based on what I have seen recently as well as questions that have been asked - it seems some critical fundamentals are not being properly addressed.
In short, I'm a flexible individual with the ability to take multiple views towards a subject as might be required in varying environments. I will lead any prospective student to the best of my ability and be truthful about issues I might not be as engaged in as I feel necessary to be able to accurately and/or effectively advise you further.
I look forward to working with you soon. |
