Before starting a tutoring session, I am interested in finding the kind of assistance a student needs the most, during a tutoring session, I am interested in knowing that the student is actually finding the help h/sh is getting to be making sense, and after a tutoring session, it is rewarding and important for me to know that the student is not only taking something away from the session but that s/he will know the ways by which the information can be retrieved whenever it is needed and by which the methods can be duplicated.
When I was still pursuing my bachelor's degrees in both psychology and sociology, I had my first student. While she has read and understood what her mathematics textbook was saying, she could not apply the principles when she was trying to solve word problems. I had the principles explained in a different manner and it made sense to her, which better enabled her to remember the logic of using learned applications whenever she needed to. Her grades improved significantly -- from having a C+ in the beginning of the semester to having an A- near the end of the term.
Although grades are only an indication that measure and show progress or regression in the academic performance of a student, it is important to me that I know I am teaching my students how to fish instead of merely feeding them the fish. |
