About
Kelly: |
I am a professional violinist and am finishing my special education degree at Wayne State University. I have a strong background in psychology and childhood development. I am also a writer with my own column for the Wayne State University's weekly newspaper. I am able to articulate directions, positive reinforcement and concepts in a clear and understandable manner. I studied Music Therapy at Michigan State University which gave me a great background in music theory, ear training and technique. At Madonna University I studied music history, arts and humanities. I have many years of experience working with children in an academic setting. I believe that positive reinforcement is the most effective way to produce positive behavior. |

Kelly's Experience:
ear training
Using guitar, piano and violin, I have spent years working on my pitch. At nine years old I performed in a choir that competed to be in the broadway show, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. It was about that time that I started studying harmony, pitch and vibrato. I have relative pitch, a curse and a blessing. If I were to tune my violin 5 cents sharp on my open A string, all of my strings will be exactly 5 cents sharp. In other words, I can't always sing an open A, but the relation to other notes and chords is in tune with the open A. Ear training is a difficult subject, but I have experience teaching a child with ADD, who saw immense improvement in his musical ability. Perfect and relative pitch are not something that you can teach, its just a part of who you are. However with continued practice and the understanding of chord structure, one can become a much better musician.

music theory
I have studied music theory at Michigan State University and Madonna University. In my coursework I gained a strong background in the circle of fifths, chord structure, harmony, composition, intonation, expression, melody, ABA/ABACAD etc. formats, dynamics, pitch, and dissonance among other things. Because of my music history studies I am able to match up the type of music with its corresponding period and historical meaning. I also am familiar with a wide range of instruments and all clefs.

proofreading
I have a strong English background from Michigan State University, Wayne State University and Madonna University. I write my own column for Wayne State University's weekly newspaper. It is an integral part of my job to proofread and edit my columns to ensure that I have articulated the point of the column clearly to mainstream readers.

sight singing
I have over 10 years of experience reading, writing, singing and playing music. I can sight read and sight sing. As a violinist I competed and received medals in 10 state and regional solo and ensemble festivals in which sight reading determined part of the score. In orchestra, sight singing was an important part of sight reading because we could not use our instruments in our first read-throughs.

violin
Once a member of the Royal Oak Symphony Orchestra, I currently am a professional violinist performing at weddings and other special events. I have won 10 medals at both regional and state solo and ensemble festivals. I also have taught violin, cello, and piano. My first lessons of technique were given by Lyman Bodman. Author of "Essays on Violin Pedagogy," and former professor at Michigan State University, he is the father of the "Balance Point."
