About
Laura: |
|
I've just finished home schooling my son (he graduated) and I'm ready for a new challenge. I have a LOT of experience working with students with learning differences and I am very creative when it comes to finding just what strategy will work with each student.
Before I was a homeschool Mom, I was a "real" teacher. I taught pre-school thru 2nd grade, worked as a reading specialist, and tutored children with special needs.
English is my strength, but I am comfortable with math thru about pre-algebra. I have also worked with ESL students and adults. |

Laura's Experience:
Bible studies
|
I have selected "Bible Studies" mainly because of my interest in the subject. However, I also feel I am qualified, not only because I completed two semesters of courses at s Bible college, but also because I have participated in many church and community Bible studies, as well as individual studies on my own.

elementary (k-6th)
|
I focussed a lot of my studies on education in college, including an Elementary Reading course, a Children's Literature course, and a course in Teaching Elementary Mathematics. I taught pre-school through second grade for over 20 years. I worked as a reading specialist for pre-school through second grade. I volunteered as a reading tutor at my son's elementary school after participating in a special training. I have also tutored several of my friends' children in various elementary subjects.

ESL/ESOL
|
I focussed on Education during college. I have no formal training in teaching ESL, but I have plenty of experience in tutoring students who are learning english as their second language. I had a German exchange student in my home for one semester and I worked with him daily on his English homework. While I tutored him he improved from a D to a B in English. I am currently tutoring another family's Brazilian Exchange Student because he was failing his English class and having a hard time communicating with his host family. Since I have been tutoring him, he has gone from an F to a C- in English and he is getting along fabulously communicating with his host family.

GED
|
I took many Education classes in college. I have no formal training in teaching at the high school level, but I do have a lot of experience. My son had a very hard time in school, due to his learning disabilities. By the time he reached high school he was very frustrated and discouraged, so I home schooled son from 9th through 12th grade and he graduated successfully. I also have experience teaching small groups of home schooled children. Each student is different and my greatest strength is in finding the pathway by which each student learns best.
