During my junior and senior years I was hand-selected to tutor under the Center for Individual Learning at the San Francisco Art Institute, one of the premier colleges of fine art in the U.S. and abroad. I gave students one-on-one attention to assist in the improvement of their reading comprehension and writing skills. I was designated as an in-class tutor and led peer-editing sessions as well. Overall, the students I worked with varied in age from 18 to 40, and needed guidance from a variety of approaches. I engaged ELL, learning disabled, and honors students in applying self-directed study skills to their academic work. I was able to help students better understand texts ranging from basic U.S. History to Lacanian criticism of contemporary art. I believe I helped many students write structured, refined arguments on their assigned topics with real confidence.
Currently, as a self-employed tutor, I am working with an 11th grade English Language Learner. I am helping him prepare for the rigorous demands of the college classroom. We work on improving his understanding of Civics texts and writing strong critical responses. In addition, I have worked with him on scholarship application essays. We are using learning strategies to improve his general study skills, grammar, and oral expression.
Recently I coached youth basketball at the Jewish Community Center. I really enjoy providing the structure for youngsters to grow and be challenged.
Finally, I am currently working as a photography instructor leading workshops for a community development program at California Lawyers for the Arts. The program provides San Francisco high school students with professional development skills in Arts Administration as well as giving these students experience in Photography. I recently led 10 continuing students on a photo-journalistic excursion of the Western Addition and the Fillmore District, during which I gave a lecture on the history of photography, provided instruction in photographic skills, and talked about the social history of the neighborhoods we took as our subject. This project will culminate in a group exhibition of the students’ work at San Francisco City Hall, in the office of Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi. I enjoy giving back the skills and knowledge that I have acquired over the course of my life, and seeing the cycle of learning advance from teacher to student, and student to teacher.

I have extensive experience as a highly competitive basketball player starting from the age of 11 onward. After earning an MVP award while playing point forward for American University of Sharjah in an eleven-university tournament in 2000, I was offered a basketball scholarship that I turned down in order to pursue my interests as an artist in photography. My knowledge, skill, and love of the game all come from thousands of hours practicing with coaches, teammates, and alone. Recently I sought to share my passion for basketball with the community and have now completed my first season as a head basketball coach at the Jewish Community Center of San Francisco. I worked with 2nd grade girls to develop their basketball fundamentals, from instilling the importance of the triple-threat position to refining free throw shooting form, post-position footwork play, and effective defensive posture utilizing peripheral vision. I found working with children very meaningful, as I possess an abiding respect for their innate intelligence, curiosity, and sense of humor. Realizing that the final goal as a basketball coach is not in creating flawless athletic automatons, I wanted to generate excitement and enthusiasm for the sport, team-oriented co-operation skills, good sportsmanship, and building confidence in unique individuals with unique needs. I believe I was successful in my efforts as the team earned a record of 5 wins and 1 loss this season.
