In some ways, I believe I was born to be a student. If I could be a student for life, I would be. I believe that learning is the only tool that emancipates us from ignorance, intolerance, and pain. I would make an excellent tutor because I do believe this about learning. Regardless of what anyone wants to do with their lives, there is no reason why they need to stop learning. That is why I have always enjoyed my studies.
Graduating 5th out of 460 students in my high school class, it is clear that I never took school lightly. However, because I enjoyed my studies, and enjoyed learning, I lived a happy existence in high school- I played basketball, I had a job, and I had a good group of friends with whom I am still in close contact. Going away to college was a tough decision. Accepted to Berkeley and Cal Poly, along with many other schools, it took me a very long time to decide upon UC San Diego. I entered UCSD as a pre-med biology student, but changed when I found the biology courses to be a bit dry for me. I moved into Communication because it was a diverse and very socially conscious major at UCSD. The Communication department at UCSD is 3rd ranked nationally, and takes a very unique approach to Communication. It includes, linguistics, visual arts, social psychology, and the sociology of media along with many other things. In addition to that, I minored in French Literature, as a result, I spent one year abroad in France as an exchange student. Again, I took the experience to learn. I absorbed everything from language, to culture, to travel tips. I graduated from UCSD with honors, and am planning to continue my education in post-graduate studies in the future. I was accepted to a Master's program in Neuroscience in Dublin, Ireland, which commences in October, and I am still deciding whether or not I will attend the program.
In the end, I believe that learning is the key to emancipation, and that teachers provide us with the pathway to that emancipation. I hope to be a professor one day myself. In the meantime, if I can help students learn, or enjoy learning, it would be an absolute pleasure for me.
