Faced with the task of exposing dozens of students to a lengthy curriculum that repeats year after year, teachers simply cannot take the time to alter a lesson plan to ensure each individual is keeping pace. They must continue moving forward and, unfortunately, accept that fact that some students will fall off course along the way. Raised by a career middle school teacher, I have somewhat of an insider's perspective of this dilemma that our educators face. Each day they are faced with a decision to move ahead and hope that those falling behind will catch up or to slow down and face the likelihood that the entire class will not receive the full curriculim by the end of the year.
With some individualized attention, however, those students falling behind can easily regain momentum to keep pace and even overtake the rest of the class. I often find that the main reason a student who is working hard to succeed falls behind is a result of the way certain concepts are communicated to them. If I see that a student is not grasping a concept, I focus on finding a new way to present it to them.
I have always enjoyed one on one tutoring and helping someone achieve their academic goals. While studying at West Point, I used to edit and proofread papers for style and grammar improvements almost daily. I also tutored a friend in trouble of failing out of the school, helping him earn A on his calculus final exam. I have experience with both routine tutoring to help students keep pace with coursework and short term (last minute) test preparation.
While I majored in biochemistry at West Point, the curriculum was comprised of a broad range of subjects. I feel that I am best suited to tutor in math (up to Calculus), biology, world history, and literature. I also have very strong proofreading and editing skills. Finally, I was also the captain of the West Point wrestling team and would be able to offer training for aspiring grapplers as well.
