About Anthony:

I’ve tutored students ranging from 6th grade to Ph.D. level. The crucial skill with tutoring is being able to explain the ideas so the student will understand them. Unfortunately, our educational system is set up with the idea that if the student didn’t understand the lesson, it must be the student’s fault. That’s like handing out medium sized shirts to everyone in class. If the shirt doesn’t fit the student, most people think it’s some shortcoming on the part of the student. I tutored algebra for a semester at a math lab. When a student came in, we sat down together. I asked her to do a few problems from the chapter in question to the best of her ability. Then I thought, ‘Okay, if I understood these types of problems from her perspective, what would be a good way to explain them?’ Something came to mind and we proceeded. That worked very well. I was able to help all of the students I worked with and they were quite pleased with their progress. One young woman said to me, “It makes sense when you explain it. I don’t understand the teacher at all.” Verbal skills are my strongest. When I began editing papers, I worked with Bi-yun, a woman from Taiwan who was studying library science. We started with editing her papers for a communications theory class. I have never studied communications theory, but it didn’t matter. The usual technique in academic articles is to take a simple idea and dress it up with jargon. Since my verbal skills are so strong, I was able to tell her, “What they really mean in this paragraph is …” Bi-yun said, “How do you do this? You don’t take a class, but you know how to do. I take a class, but I don’t know how to do.”
