In 2006, I graduated from Regis College with honors. While there, I majored in English with a minor in Theatre. I was involved in two of their drama productions. I was the head editor of their literary publication my senior year and published in their annual issue my four years there. While in high school, I headed the news department of their newspaper before becoming the editor-in-chief my senior year.
I have never tutored professionally. I voluntarily tutored my peers in English and Writing during high school and college. I would say my teaching style is pretty simple. I encourage my student to attempt every homework assignment without my help and only turn to me while completing it when they are truly in need of assistance. After the assignment is completed, I go over the answers with them and discuss the answers until they feel comfortable. I then allow my student to ask me any questions/ voice any issues pertaining to the topic so that their comfort level is increased that much more. My goal is that my student will leave the session not only better prepared, but more confident as a student and as an individual. I know that, though well meaning, many tutors tend to complete the assignment for their student, hoping the student will learn simply through watching them instead of sitting back and letting their student try it for themselves. From experience, I know that this style doesn't work. A student cannot learn if they are never challenged.
As your tutor, I will challenge you to do your best while still showing you the patience, care and respect that you deserve. My past students use to tell me that I was a kind person who made them laugh and helped them to calm down when they got too stressed out. I hope to provide this type of learning environment for you. |
