 About Nathan:
Private Lessons I offer music lessons for Saxophone, Bboe, Clarinet, Flute, Voice (male only), and Piano. I utilize my teaching philosophy described below in all of my lessons to foster both a fun and top quality learning environment. Traditional Methods My personal philosophy is that traditional scale and rhythm-based exercises are very important to the development of a solid musician, but I feel that they should not be the only methods used. Too often, I see private music instructors that utilize only method books and scales in lessons, and therefore produce students that have a great technical foundation, but lack performance skills, professional tone, improvisational skills, fluidity, and stage presence. I feel that traditional methods should be coupled with non-traditional methods to produce well-rounded musicians and performers. Musical Literature I feel that all students should be introduced to classical and contemporary literature from the time that they begin playing their instrument. Literate fosters the development of lyrical musicians, as many traditional methods focus on technical development. I have found that the use of literature in lessons also helps preserve the student's interest in both lessons and playing their instrument. Improvisation Learning improvisation is very important for developing musicians, as jazz, blues, and rock are the most applicable genres of music for a saxophonist especially. I feel that it is easier for students to begin learning improvisation as they learn their scales, and it also provides fun reinforcement of their key signatures. Technology I am a firm believer in taking full advantage in all technology available to musicians. For this reason, I use Smart Music as a teaching tool for my students. It is an innovative software application that helps students learn both methods and literature by analyzing them as they play and generating a report of all errors that they made during their performance. It also acts as a smart accompanist, playing piano parts along with the student and changing tempo as the student does. I feel that Smart Music adds the valuable experience of an accompanist in lessons without the cost. Performance The final part of developing well-rounded musicians is performing. I encourage and assist all of my students by hosting recitals where students can display their progress to family and friends. This helps student get accustomed to performing in front of a live audience, and it allows parents to truly see the progress that their student has made. Ensembles I encourage all of my students to play in a wide range of ensembles from saxophone ensembles to chamber groups for clarinets to jazz bands to classical ensembles. I am always available and willing to coach saxophone ensembles and chamber groups, and I offer group rates for students looking to form ensembles.

Learn More About Nathan's Experience:
clarinet
As a saxophonist, I started playing clarinet for doubling purposes about four years ago. I immediately enjoyed playing the clarinet and decided to expand my studies beyond jazz clarinet doubling. I currenly perform on clarinet during musicals and for solo projects. I have also played clarinet with my church orchestra. I am comfortable teaching beginner through advanced-intermediate.
composition (music)
I have completed four years for music theory classes, along with lessons in counterpoint. I currently compose music for solo saxophone and saxophone ensembles. I emphasize proper harmonics and chordial analysis.
drums
Throughout high school and college, I played mallet percussion and timpani for wind ensemble and percussion ensemble. I served as principal timpanist both in high school and college. As a percussionist, I also know and can teach standard rudiments. I do not teach drum set, as I am a classical drummer. I am comfortable teaching beginner-advanced timpani, beginner-intermediate mallets, and beginner-intermediate snare drum.
general music
As a professional musician, I have been exposed to all genres of music, music history, world music, aural skills, and music theory. I studied all of these subjects and more at Kennesaw State University.
music theory
I have completed four years of music theory and two years of aural skills. I can help with finguring out chordial analysis, counterpoint, and composition.
piano
I currenly teach beginner level piano. I completed two years of piano class at Kennesaw State University, and I have played keyboard for a local rock band. In my lessons, I emphasize the use of proper technique and appropriate fingerings.
saxophone
I have been playing the saxophone for 11 years. I currently play saxophone with a couple of Atlanta-area bands, with a church orchestra, and freelance work with local high schools. I have played almost all genres of music, ranging from classical to latin to jazz. I have experience with orchestras, church groups, jazz bands, chamber ensembles, rock bands, and musicals. I studied saxophone performance at Kennesaw State University. I currently teach lessons at a local music center, from my home studio, and at student's homes.
