About Herschel:

I am a communicator. I have searched out ideas and their history for a lifetime, and find most satisfaction in enabling others to become acquainted with great thoughts. As a minister, my field of avid study is religion and the cluster of practical life concerns which it touches. I have written, both in college and graduate school and for publication. I own a library of nearly 20,000 volumes. I hope soon to complete a volume on the philosophy of religious experience. My training involved learning of Hebrew (Biblical), many years of Greek (both Classical and Koine'), and Latin. I daily read in the Greek New Testament, and have taught both Hebrew and Greek classes on an ongoing basis to church groups. I especially delight in helping people to overcome obstacles. I love children and youth, being the father of 7 and grandfather of 10. I have developed and presented many times a seminar on marriage and the family. I have extensively taught and practiced pastoral counseling. I am a confident and well received public speaker. I have taught university public speaking classes. Nothing thrills me more than passionately conveying knowledge. My approach to education is first to induce a passion for the subject matter. I then seek to integrate it into the larger horizons of the disciplines and life world. I have learned to use pictures and imagination to grasp difficult concepts, and like to see students fully using their creative energies to gain larger insights into the subjects they find formidable. Since learning is always a shared discovery of value, I share in the process of discovery with students, but also try to enable them to share the value with others effectively.
