 About Gretchen:
I currently am employed as an applied behavior analyst working one-on-one with a 6 year old boy with autism. I work within a Kindergarten classroom and although my duties entail me to be with one child I aid in the daily activities of all the children in the classroom.

I am seeking to be a tutor in order to further utilize my talents while helping someone else achieve their academic goals. I believe that I learn as much from those I teach as they do from me; we are truly all teachers and learners.

I will be finishing my undergraduate education this fall (2008) on the East Coast and from there I will be going to law school. I feel my strength lays in the written and spoken word, though I am very capable in helping in other areas as well. My passion for the fields of Law and Psychology, combined with my experience in the Special Education field, gives me the ability to help above just the subjects of English. I firmly believe, however, that it is not appropriate to "pretend" to have knowledge to help another person and therefor would not hesitate to admit when I am unable to help where needed. I am most willing to seek the correct answers or direct a student to someone who can ultimately be of better service. Those who teach must be as humble as they are knowledgeable.

I'd like to be able to list a specific 'teaching style' but I do not limit myself to one method; what works for one student may not well work for another. My willingness to adapt helps students feel comfortable to excel within their own limitations. As an ABA I am trained in a methodology that believes in positive reinforcement as a means to increase a desired, and correct, behavior. This could translate to a tutoring session to mean that I lean towards offering suggestions to better a student's work as opposed to just pointing out the errors and expecting a correction. Critical thinking skills are at the basis of every teaching method I use, and I am always looking for ways to fade away prompts. I never do for someone what they can do themselves, but I will always offer my services to those genuinely seeking to change their current methods.

Aside from academics ... I have many other passions! I recently adopted my first puppy, Duke, and he keeps me quite busy training and loving! I also have three cats and a rabbit! Together, we create quite the unique family. Although I am nearing my end in Saint Louis City I have loved living in the Tower Grove area and all the enjoyment it offers: the Botanical Gardens, Tower Grove Park, the community, and the all around beauty of the area in which I reside. I love going to baseball games and really enjoy hiking on Chubb Trail whenever I can. I enjoy the art of photography and have spent time in front of as well as behind a camera. The picture I've uploaded is from a recent photo taken of me, and an example of some of 'my work'. (I promise I won't be in formal wear for tutoring!) I can constantly be found singing and dancing around, though I try to limit that to the privacy of my on home so as not to embarrass anyone else. I could go on and on but really I'd rather you email me with any questions you have, because I ALSO love to answer questions!

I look forward to being of help in your decision to take on a tutor, and I'm proud of any student who's taking the responsibility to receive help in general. I daily seek guidance from the teachers in my life and am anxious to help guide others as well!

proofreading
Trial and error, along with a lifelong enjoyment of reading, has given me the ability to look through papers and distinguish between something being said in its best form and not. The teacher I currently teach with, someone with 29+ years of experience, routinely hands papers and documents over to me to proofread and edit for her! She loves the way I write and trusts my ability to help her present herself in a professional manner through her work. My mother is a paralegal who has spent several, several years proofreading for one attorney or another and it is through her tutoring when I was a little girl that I soared above my classmates in my ability to write with class and poise. I received an A+ in Advanced Writing and Rhetoric at Saint Louis University and as a Pre-Law student I take pride in my ability to re-word something to maximize its potential for getting a point across. There are many type of proofreading needs and I'd be more than happy to assist in working with a student to better enable them to write excellent papers on their own. p.s. I will not write papers for students!! There are better ways to offer different writing styles to a student; this can come in the form of citing examples of other works with similarly desired writing styles, to going through a variety of writing exercises. Both help in aiding someone to have a better grasp of what to look for when proofreading their own papers in the future.
special needs
I have worked for three years with Special Needs children; the key word there is children. I am comfortable working with a younger age range, and would need more specifics on the reason for a tutor before I would know if I am qualified. I would not go so far as to say I must limit myself to grade school children. Teenagers are out of my area of experience, but depending on the need I may be able to be of great help. I am confident in my ability to have the utmost patience with a student and help in braking down learning into simple forms to better grasp certain learning concepts. I am an Applied Behavior Analyst; this is a position that utilizes studied methods in psychology to work with children predominantly showing signs of, or diagnosed with, autism. Its principles can be applied to MANY different areas of teaching and learning. I understand the unique needs of children with ADD/ADHD, Autism, and other learning disabilities. Please email me with questions regarding your needs, and I'd be more than happy to see what I am capable of doing.
