About
Tammie: |
I have worked with children in and out of school settings as a tutor since I was in high school. I spent all of my free time in high school assisting the teachers in the lower elementary school in the classroom. I have tutored elementary school students in phonics, reading, and math. I have also voluntarily taught summer school for kindergarten through eighth grade students at a small inner city private Christian school.
I currently work at a daycare with a certified preschool program where I teach phonics for three ,four, and five year olds and beginning reading for kindergarten students and older students that need a little extra help. I also assist my after school students with their homework and monitor their progress in school via report cards. I also have a daughter of my own who will be entering kindergarten this coming school year. |

I have worked as an elementary school tutor in many capacities. In high school, I spent all of my free time in the lower elementary school tutoring students in phonics, reading, and math as well as assisting teachers in the classroom. In college, I volunteered for a inner city private school during the summer and on breaks. I tutored K-8 grade students in reading, spelling, math, and note-taking.
I currently work for a preschool where I teach phonics to three through six year olds and reading to older students. I am also the after school teacher and I serve K-4 grade students. I assist them with their homework as well as monitor their progress via their report cards.

grammar
|
Grammar was one of my best subjects in school. I am an avid writer and I try my best to make sure that everything that I write is readable. I help my K-4th grade after school students learn the importance of using proper grammar in writing and in general conversations. I also help them understand what "proper grammar" means.

phonics
|
At the preschool that I work for, I currently teach phonics to three through six year olds, including my own four-year old daughter. I teach them the alphabet-- out of order--as well as the sounds that the letter makes. I also go over words that start with that letter and I encourage them to look for those letters in print, especially in their names.
We also work on both tracing and writing the letter. I normally cover four to five letters a section and at the end of each section, I give a short assessment to see what they remember. I also review all letters and sounds in each section before moving on to the next unit.
Once they have completed phonics, we move on to our beginning reading program in which we worked on blending sounds together to make words using word families and I introduce basic sight words. After this we move on to making sentences. Once I am confident that they are doing well, we move on to reading books with very simple sentences using the words that they learn.

proofreading
|
I believe that the best way to help a student with proofreading is to read what they wrote right back to them or to have them read what they wrote to me! Doing this helps them to see what makes sense and what doesn't and we work from there. My after school students now ask me if what they write sounds correct and I help them correct their errors and make sure that their sentences flow well. I do check their writings for punctation and help them to understand what certain punctuation marks are used for in writing.

study skills
|
My approach to study skills is to show the student what NOT to do first. Many students try to multi-task while studying, which does not allow for proper understanding of what they are reading.
I help my students to first make their place a true studying environment by gathering everything they need for the subject that they are studying. I encourage them to take notes as they study and to use any study helps given to them by their teachers as their guide. I help them understand how normal room noise, such as music, can both help and hinder their studying. Once these are established, I find that studying comes a lot easier to them.
