About Katie:

I am UC Berkeley graduate with a BA (Honors) in English and Linguistics and am currently a PhD student in Linguistics at UH. I study the science of language and grammar as well as work on documenting and analyzing endangered and extinct languages. In the past, I have been a tutor and editor, and would love to work with students of all ages and levels to help them achieve their English mastery, reading, or writing goals. My credentials?: I have for two and 1/2 years been part of a research team at UC Berkeley investigating English syntax (structure) and semantics (meaning) involving extensive study of English as a natural language, working under researchers at the top of the field. Additionally, I was fortunate to spend my undergraduate career in the best literature department in the country at UC Berkeley as well, and so have plenty of guidance and practice in English conventions, writing mastery, and reading comprehension. My abilities and interests have made me a go-to person for editing, and I have even worked on a 300+ page dissertation for a PhD candidate at UC Berkeley in 2007, in addition to proofreading and making suggesting for paper submissions on the request of colleagues and friends in academic research. Finally, I have experience tutoring reading and writing skills to first and second-language English speakers at the City College of San Francisco, as well as volunteer service teaching ESL in Thailand at the elementary and middle school level. I have received training in tutoring strategy and planning and can help you get through that paper, understand that chapter, or learn how to organize ideas, sentences, and whole essays--or just help with some proofreading if that's what you need. I have done this successfully myself for years, enjoy working with others through the problem and tricks. Reading and writing are activities I love to do --and teach to others! -- so please don't hesitate to contact me with the area I can help you with. Mahalo!
