About
Julie: |
|
One of my deepest passions is helping students succeed -- something I have done since high school, when I was the first student to become a teaching assistant for my school's history department. Following high school graduation, I continued my tutoring career by serving as a teaching assistant for one of my college's largest freshman introductory classes for three years. During my senior year of college, I met bi-weekly with a college student with learning disabilities to coach her in all of her liberal arts curriculum and on study and test-taking skills.
One of my greatest strengths in tutoring is understanding the student's personal learning style and helping them study in a way which will work for them. I would love to help students with test-taking strategies. While my undergraduate degree is in History and Theology (I double-majored), I have an excellent knowledge of subjects including English, writing, basic computer skills, and study skills in almost any area.
I graduated from Gordon College, a small private liberal arts college outside of Boston, MA, in May of 2007. During my junior year of college, I studied abroad at Oxford University in England, gaining valuable research and paper-writing skills at one of the most prestigious universities in the world. I recently moved here to Portland to begin graduate school at George Fox University (in SW Portland, not Newberg).
As my resume attests, I received numerous academic awards through my college career. But even beyond my academic skill, I am personable and love helping others. Please drop me a note if you have further questions. |

Julie's Experience:
Bible studies
|
I am a recent graduate of Gordon College, where I majored in Biblical and Theological studies. During my time there, I spent three years as a teaching assistant for the Biblical Studies department, leading weekly tutoring sessions and meeting with students one-on-one.
I am currently pursuing a Masters of Divinity at George Fox Evangelical Seminary in SW Portland. I have already completed several graduate-school-level Biblical studies courses, including introductory Hebrew and Greek, Pauline Studies, and Christian Ethics.

grammar
|
I have always had an intuitive understanding of English grammar. As a teaching assistant and tutor in college, my supervising professor often referred students to me for grammar-related questions. While working for a publishing company (EBSCO Publishing), I was required to constantly be thoughtful of my sentence structure and grammar.
I am particularly passionate about punctuation. I often wince at misused commas and apostrophies. I would enjoy making punctuation fun and applicable to students.

study skills
|
One of my greatest strengths as a tutor in my previous experience has been helping students to understand their own unique study style. I understand that half the battle with studying is learning how to manage time and study what the teacher or professor thinks is important.
I understand that different subjects often need very different approaches in studying. I would enjoy working with a variety of students to help them find success.
