I have been an artist, photographer, writer and an educational researcher evaluating federally funded programs for educationally at risk children and their families. My focus was family literacy. While writing case studies of families at risk, I became fascinated with the way English was taught to new Americans. I decided to become an ESL teacher four years ago and signed up for a TEFL course which resulted in my certification as a teacher of English as a Foreign Language.
I have been teaching ever since. Most of my students are not refugees, although I did have a former Minister of Education from a country engaged in a long struggle for democracy. I have privately tutored scientists, lawyers, and doctors, as well as a 19 year old Brazilian boy.
For me, teaching people from all over the world has given an opportunity to learn about the cultures of my students. Watching them become more confident speakers of English is a joy.
