About
Patrick Joshua: |
|
Having graduated magna cum laude with a degree in Theater Arts from CSUS (California State University Sacramento, I have gone on to earn a TESOL certification from Trinity College London and certificates in language studies (Arabic and Chinese) from the Universidad de Granada (University of Granada). I have lived in five countries including the United States, Austria, the United Kingdom, Spain, and the British Virgin Islands, and I have tutored and taught students around the world ranging from elementary to adult learners including as a full-time supply teacher in California public schools for four academic years.
My strengths as a teacher include my connection with students, my ability to explain subject matter in easy to understand ways using clear vocabulary and techniques that stimulate memory for retention, and a facility with a wide range of subject matters. I can help my students with everything from their basic mathematics to their foreign language pronunciation.
Besides teaching, I have run a theater company for nearly a decade and have real-world business experience that helps me relate abstract subject matter to actual life. I am a sought-after editor and proofreader, a published playwright, and a dedicated actor to boot.
My chief asset, however, is that I love to teach because I love interacting with students. Watching someone learn and master a new concept is thrilling, and I am always lucky to be a part of that. In that way, my students almost always teach me more than I ever imagined I could learn.

I have a Trinity-College certificate and have privately tutored language students in both the UK and Spain. My familiarity with Spanish and French allows me to connect the learning of English to those languages for speakers of them, but my style is immersion. The way I have learned other languages is by putting myself in the midst of them, and though this is often frustrating, it bears fruit very quickly. Because I have lived in other language environments (Spain and Austria), I am quite empathetic to the pains of not understanding, but I am also knowledgeable of the joys of significant progress. I love languages very much, and I adore my native tongue. I write plays and other literature in English, so I am not only a teacher but a practitioner of its use.

I was a nationally award-winning editor in student journalism before going on to found my own theater company. I have extensive experience in writing and editing dramatic work both my own as a playwright and other people’s in my capacity as colleague, literary manager, and publisher. I also have experience editing academic work as a university teaching assistant as well as in my years of being a teacher myself. I have designed for the web, done countless jobs in marketing for the arts including writing and editing flyers, programs, online content, press releases, newspaper articles, and broadcast copy. I am versed in AP style as well as APA, Chicago, Harvard, and other academic standards not only because of my own work but because of helping others with theirs. I also keep abreast of grammar primers and scholarly work on the history and future of the English language.

I have a degree in Theater Arts from CSUS and have owned and operated my own theater company for nearly ten years. I have taught acting in California, Hawai'i, and the British Virgin Islands, have actor coached for several companies, and consistently produce plays of my own writing. I have done children's theater as well as full productions of traditional theater, and I have worked with actors ranging from teens to adults. I am well versed in the canon of dramatic literature from Europe and the United States as well as having familiarity with Asian styles, and I have even done the physical labor of turning a warehouse space into a performance venue (i.e., I have worked construction for a theater). I have stage-managed large-scale shows, acted in an Equity run, and have stood at the top of a ladder focusing lights. If it's in the theater, I've done it, and I'm very happy to help other people learn it.
