About Garrit:

Hello! I am available for tutoring in multiple subjects.

I attended the University of Puget Sound from 2004-2006, Majoring in Theatre Arts and Religious Studies. In 2006, I moved to New York and attended the American Musical and Dramatic Academy to further my education in Theatre. I have worked off-Broadway, and am an award nominated actor, and an award winning composer. I teach private acting courses, and am well versed in methods applicable to both dramatic theatre, as well as Musical theatre.

As a musician, I have studied piano classically for 12 years, having learned from some of the best teachers in the Northwest (including Julliard graduate Tanya Stambuk). I have been teaching piano for 8 years to a wide age range (6-40) and various skill levels (beginner to advanced). I have received multiple awards for both my skill and musicianship. I am also an accomplished saxophone player and accordion player, and a classically trained singer.

As a math tutor, I have tutored pre-algebra through algebra 2. In High School, I received an A grade in College-in-high school pre-calculus while simultaneously earning an A grade in AP Statistics. Math comes very naturally, and I thoroughly enjoy teaching it!

I also am a tutor in American Sign Language. I have been signing for the past 8 years. Since 2003, I have worked as an ASL Interpreter for the Theatre, and was the resident interpreter at the Rainier Valley Ensemble Theatre in Seattle and Encore! Theatre in Gig Harbor, WA. While I attended College at the University of Puget Sound in 2005, I was the first and only student in the history of the school to pass an ASL fluency test (with scores of 100% in each category) in order to satisfy the foreign language credit. In 2003, I taught three 5-week courses in ASL to grade school children K-6. I am currently an Assistant Organizer for the NYC ASL MeetUp group in Manhattan/Brooklyn, and regularly teach ASL at the meetings. I also privately teach small groups of beginning/intermediate Adult ASL, as well as groups of "Mommy and Me!" ASL in Brooklyn.

My energy is light, and my teaching style is fun! A good time is guaranteed. Hope to hear from you!

More On Garrit's Subjects:

  • ear training

I am a classically trained pianist and singer, and have had years of ear training myself. As a private piano teacher, I require all of my students to study ear training as part of their curriculum. I also teach my voice students how to recognize intervals on sight in order to make sight reading easier. In College, I tutored both fellow students and students in the community in Ear Training methods. I am equipped with the tools necessary to train the ear!

  • piano

I have been a licensed piano teacher for 8 years, and have taught various levels (from beginning to advanced) and ages (from 5-45). I learned from some of the best teachers in the North West (including Julliard Graduate and acclaimed pianist Tanya Stambuk), and have won numerous awards for musicianship and ability. I employ methods that insure long, healthy piano playing. I emphasize not only proper technique, but also musicality-I believe music is like poetry, and my teaching methods will allow for a story to be told through the music being played. The atmosphere is always fun, challenging, and encouraging!

  • religion

I have studied religion for the past 11 years, with a focus in Christian, Gnostic, and New Testament Studies. I have always been fascinated by the history of the Church and the history of the Bible. I am well versed in historical aspects of the Bible, and what early writings meant to the early followers of Christianity. I also have an excellent understanding of Gnostic texts and beliefs, and what various early texts meant to the world in which they were written. In College, I was a double major in Theatre Arts and Religion, and also have a great understanding of the role of Religion in Theatre (both contemporary and classical). Aside from Christianity, I have studied Greek religion and mythology as well as contemporary Paganism. It is a subject that I find fascinating and fulfilling, and you will too!

  • voice (music)

I have been teaching voice for 4 years. I have a unique understanding of the human voice, and a great passion for teaching individuals to bring out the best of their abilities. I teach various genres of music (from classical repetoire to Musical Theatre), and choose pieces based on your interests and passions. I then incorporates various techniques to ensure your voice remains healthy and the best that it can sound. I have been called "The best voice teacher in New York" by my students, and my students say the lessons are "Fun, informative, and very beneficial....after one lesson, you will notice a difference". I have students on tour, and have coached and accompanied actors who work on Broadway.
