About
Heather: |
I graduated from Western Connecticut State University in 2007 with a BA in Psychology and focused on research and statistics. I work daily with children and have lots of hands on experience helping with homework and tutoring up to college level and some graduate level statistics. I enjoy teaching and aiding kids in learning everything from math to music. I took private voice lessons for 7 years and performed in 100s of shows including an opera on the Schubert Theater stage. I'm willing to help you learn to succeed in all areas of schooling and teach you to prepare for the future. I'm at your service. |

Heather's Experience:
ear training
Ear training has been a large part of my personal vocal training. By playing a chord on the piano or keyboard and training your brain to separate the tones you can better sing in a group. When I teach ear-training I first see what the student is already capable of by playing and chord and asking what notes they hear and having them replicate them. As I discover what they can accomplish I help them to go from two notes highly separated to multiple tones very close together gradually.

sight singing
I was originally taught to sight sing with out accompaniment and with only the Do-Re-Mi scale as a point of reference. This is the best way to learn sight singing because understanding what sheet music looks like which I can also teach helps one to master their vocal ability. Also it allows for more time to be spent in inflection and emotion and not on the specific notes if you can hear in your head what you see on the paper. That is something that can be taught. I've taught my friends with no musical background how to do it!

SPSS
I have 2 years of undergraduate study using SPSS to analysis data. I also use SPSS on an almost daily basis in my current job as a research assistant. SPSS has become similar to second nature with me. I have used SPSS 13.0 and currently use 14.0 at home as well. Using SPSS I can create large databases of information and run frequencies, ANOVA's, T-tests, Z-Tests, chi-squares, linear regressions, complex factorials, and multiple other analysis.
statistics
I completed 5 statistic courses in my undergraduate course load. 4 out of those 5 were research and statistics combined so that I was creating projects and then analyzing data I collected. The fifth class was statistics only. I'm highly proficient in one way randomized ANOVA's and factorials, chi square analysis, t-tests, z-tests, probability and more. For all of these types of analysis I can compute them by hand and using SPSS, or MINITAB programs.

study skills
After many years of schooling I have tried many different types of study skills and have learned the benefits and downfalls to different types of techniques and learned time management. My experiences can help others to quickly find what works best for them.

voice (music)
I have taken seven years of private voice lessons and have an extensive library of music on hand to use to teach. I understand breathing techniques, scales, singing in a group and solo, and recording techniques. I have performed on stage for 8 years singing and acting and have performed on the Schubert stage and have been recorded on three CD's.
