I have been teaching Spanish at college preparatory independent high schools for the past eight years. I have a degree in Spanish from Dickinson College, PA with Cum Laude. I participated in Dickinson Study Abroad program in Málaga, Spain and that is when I decided to become a Spanish teacher. Prior to learning Spanish, I had learned Russian, English and French, but Spanish became my favorite. It was my love for the Spanish language, for Spanish culture and people that made me decide to share this love with my future students. After coming back from Spain, first I taught at Westover School, CT and later at University High School, CA - both independent college preparatory high schools.
My experience with foreign languages helps me understand the way the Germanic and Romance languages work. I have a deep familiarity with grammatical concepts and can explain grammar rules with much ease using different methods and approaches. I make grammar accessible to my students by designing activities which involve grammar in written and oral expression and communication.
I love teaching and engaging my students in all aspects of learning a foreign language: speaking, reading, writing. My classes are mainly held in Spanish. Students are expected to respond to me in Spanish-this is the only way to get better at speaking. I understand the feelings of insecurity that come with speaking in a foreign language, but by positive reinforcements and support, I help my students gain the necessary confidence to express themselves in Spanish.
As a teacher of high standards, I enjoy sharing the works of literature and introducing my students to literary traditions of Spanish and Hispanic world. I will help you appreciate the nuances of the Spanish language and look at the texts analytically. Many of my students began read books in Spanish and enjoy the beauty of this truly fascinating language. I hope to inspire you to do so as well. |
