About
Monica: |
|
For the last two years of my undergraduate career, I received straight As. During my final semester, I worked as a writing consultant and editor for the school's creative writing journal. In addition, I gave a presentation for The Celebration of Scholarship that received excellent reviews. In addition, I formed an intramural soccer team and volunteered for the Labre project, a student-based group aimed to aid the homeless in Cleveland. I'm currently working on course work required for a teaching certification, and I plan to teach high school English while coaching either soccer or softball. |

study skills

Graduating from a liberal college, John Carroll University, core curriculum diversified my studies which, in turn, demanded different study methods. For example, preparing for philosophy tests typically required more analysis of block information. To offer a contrasting example, when taking History of the English Language, I needed to recall vocabulary definitions. My study preparation for these tests, then, usually involved flash cards.
My own experience with study groups and being involved in academia has taught me that people vary in terms of study methods as much as the subjects they plan to study. For instance, some students learn best through auditory repetition while others require visual aids. Moreover, I took two years of psychology course work; not only did this offer information about children and adolescent cognitive development, it also expanded my understanding of the different types of mnemonic devices. This knowledge will help me adapt to each student as I see fit. Much like my involvement with my school's writing center, I appreciate the challenges that equip me with the tools necessary to be an effective teacher.
During the next year, I will also be taking Education classes at the University of North Carolina-Charlotte which will expand my knowledge of various pedagogical approaches. While learning theory, I believe I will benefit as much as the students I tutor because these experiences will allow me to see theory as it applies to practice.
