About

I am currently the Assistant Costume Designer for a local theatre company. My job requires advanced sewing abilities, an analytical mind, strong organization skills, a knowledge of fashion/costume history, exceptional communication, and a passion for storytelling. I am so fortunate to have a job that I enjoy so much. It demands long hours, but it pays back in the people you meet and the lives you change.
The theatre is one of those things I was just born to tackle. I had a flare for the creative from a young age; creating art out of my dinner, choreographing dances to the Beach Boys, and inventing charismatic invisible friends. I am one of the lucky ones who can still channel my youth and use it for good in my adult life.
I'm still learning, too. Theatre is an evolving craft. New technologies are continually birthed to adjust to the demands of our storytelling. Because of the ephemeral nature of the art, a good deal of time is spent in research, and even more time is spent communicating with the experts who have "been there and done that". Let's grow together and find inspiration in one another. |

I heard the first hums of a sewing machine well before I could talk. My mother is a gifted seamstress who hand-made all of her ballroom dancing gowns when I was growing up. I have been blessed with an ounce of her skill and patience in this. I began getting really serious about designing and building costumes when I was an undergraduate in college. The university exposed me to the wonders of fabric and color and texture and aligned it with the infinite possibilities of character. A spark was suddenly a flame and I was hooked for good. A very dedicated mentor urged me along and by her side I became an adept seamstress and a hungry designer. I believe it was this one-on-one attention that brought my skills to an exciting new level.
Six years down the line, I have stitched for over 60 productions from musicals to dramas. I have served three professional internships from theatres across the country who exposed me to various time periods and genres. I can compose a garment from commercial patterns (including advanced Vogue and Folkwear patterns)or from draping and drafting a muslin mockup. I also have experience with fabric dying, and I greatly enjoy garment distressing.
I also have access to great facilities to teach and mentor a young stitcher. Here at the theatre, we have four sewing machines, sergers, industrial iron, two large cutting tables, and body forms of various sizes. All the tools are ready and waiting!
