I am Melanie, an energetic educator for 12 years, serving as a guide for willing learners in the areas of self-love, self-determination, self-sufficiency and self-preservation. I was privileged to gain critical study, research, writing and communication skills from the University of California Berkeley. I majored in English Literature with a Concentration in Multicultural Studies and Minors in Education and African American studies. I am an experienced Elementary, Middle and High School teacher in Northern and Southern California, as well as University lecturer in Belize, Central America. I teach literacy (the art of reading, writing, and speaking) utilizing educational methods like critical pedagogy, socratic questioning, creative thinking/writing, and effective life skills that incorporates self-reflection and individuals/groups taking accountability for our own power to manifest our realities. I honor student's unique learning styles, whether audio(listening based), kinesthetic (movement based), visual (sight based), and the like. I respect myself and I respect others. Effective teaching is meeting a student where they are in their development and assisting them in creating goals of high standards and success. In alignment with Paulo Friere's notion of students (all human spirits), we all come to any environment with a wealth of knowledge. I do my best to create a learning space that builds a community of dialogue, engagement and respect, welcoming and challenging all perspectives, all ways of learning and communicating and all ways of being. I promote activities that encourage physical movement, as our minds connect to muscle memory. I live by Four Agreements: To be impeccable with my word. To avoid taking anything personally. To refrain from making assumptions. To always do my best. These are principles as a teacher and student of life, I hope to share with any willing learner. ONENESS.
