About Lucia:

I will graduate Magna Cum Laude from Wake Forest University in May 2008 with a BA in Psychology, Pre-med and a Spanish Minor. I have experience, hired by Wake Forest University, to tutor in Biology, Physics, Spanish, and Chemistry. I earned my CRLA tutoring certification this past year. I also have experience with younger children through 3+ summers at Camp Kanuga and Kanuga Conference Center in Western North Carolina for children ages 7 to 15. I was a rock-climbing and ropes course instructor and helped reinforce the ideas of team building. I aspire to begin medical school in Fall of 2009, and I hope that my experience as a tutor can better help me relate to my future patients.

More On Lucia's Subjects:

  • soccer

I have played soccer since age 8. I started playing in Premier league soccer at age 14 and continued through high school. I was recruited heavily to play in college, and played for a short time on the Wake Forest University Varsity team before quitting for personal reasons.

  • study skills

I have a proven track record of effective study skills. I was 5th in my class in high school, graduating with honors. I am currently in the top 10% of my class at Wake Forest University and will graduate with ~3.73 this May. I often have to tutor my current tutees at Wake Forest University in study skills because many students that come to Wake never had to study before. They were just smart. So, first we break down the components of effective studying, which involve reading the material and highlighting sentences or concepts that are more challenging or central to the understanding of the material. Then, we strategize different ways of preparing for tests. Initially, it is important that students allow more time to study, which they might reduce later once they learn effective study techniques. It is also important to learn which method is most effective for the student since all students are different (whether it be visually, auditory, or kinesthetically). Personally, for a test, I will condense my notes into 5 pages, highlight the areas that are important and that I do no understand and review those. As I said though, everyone is different and finding what works is the first step. Then, reinforcing these methods and using outside resources (like teachers) also contributes to the process.
