 About Kevin:
My name is Kevin and I am a 2007 graduate of UCLA with a B.A. in Political Science concentrating in International Relations, with a minor in Geography. I was on the Dean's Honors List while at UCLA, am a lifetime member of the California Scholarship Federation, am an AP Scholar, and graduated from St. Ignatius College Preparatory with Honors and over 20 Honors/AP semesters. My SAT score was 1360 and I scored 161 on the LSAT exam. I have been accepted to a number of prestigious law schools and will begin instruction in the fall. I am also an accomplished athlete with opportunities out of high school to play Division III basketball and Division I lacrosse. I have also played baseball for over 10 years and recently completed a 4-year stint playing in the Los Angeles Municipal Parks and Recreation Adult Fast-Pitch Baseball league where I batted over .500 over 5 seasons. I have a very unique blend of athleticism and intellect and feel like I would be very well suited for whatever you child may need. My life experiences are very well-rounded and include a summer internship with Congressman Tom Lantos, summer travel to New Zealand to perform conservation work, geographical research at UCLA, and 3 trips to Mexico for community building and construction. I also run the online photo gallery for my church, which can be viewed at http://www.shorelinewest.org/community/photos. While in high school, I tutored for a number of families in my neighborhood. In college I hosted several "study groups" which consisted of me teaching the rest of the people in attendence whatever material we were covering in class. I also had the wonderful opportunity to tutor my sister through middle school and high school and to watch her succeed under my tutelage when Sylvan Learning Centers and various other tutors had failed. I believe in teaching through through building up the student's confidence and providing him or her with helpful insights into where they can improve the study process or problem solving methods. Thank you very much for your consideration and I look forward to the possibility of working with you!

ACT
As a high school student, I took this exam without any prior knowledge of the test or its formatting and received a score of 29 with a sub-score of 32 on the math section. I completed a rigorous science curriculum while in high school including AP Biology and Honors Physics. At UCLA, I further my scientific knowledge and methods with Biology of Cancer and by performing a research project about the avian population in 3 different types of habitats throughout the campus. I received top marks from my Professor and Teaching Assistant, both of whom have their PhD in Geography. In my own preparation for college entry examinations, I took courses with Kaplan, Princeton Review, and Ivy West. I am familiar with their methods and how to employ them successfully on exam day. My English skills have been honed through taking 2 honors-level classes in high school and both AP Literature and AP Language for which I received the score of 4 on each exam. In college I supplemented these skills by pursuing a degree in Political Science, a fantastic forum to apply SAT skills in everyday collegiate studies. Further, I participated in LSAT test preparation, which employs many skills from the regular SAT but at an elevated difficulty level. Additionally, I am also certified to tutor the SAT exam through WyzAnt and many of the same principles apply for both exams. I am also certified to tutor the SAT and many of the same principles apply for both exams.
baseball
Baseball is another sport that I have played my whole life that I have great knowledge of, which I would love to pass on. My natural position was at shortstop for the first 10 years of my career. I was blessed with a strong arm and nimble feet, which have helped me to become a solid player capable of playing any position. More recently I have switched to outfield because my team has been full of infielders where I have excelled making more than a handful of diving catches and outfield assists. After 8 years away from infield, my team was short on players and I was ushered back into my almost forgotten role up the middle of the infield. I filled in remarkably throwing out 2 batters on the run in balls up the middle and making a few plays deep in the hole between shortstop and third base. I truly love baseball and throughout my career have played every position and know the fundamentals for each, even catcher. Despite only playing once a week, I can still throw in the high 60’s and would be great for everything from pitching batting practice, infield drills, to outfield practice. Throughout college, I played for a team in the Los Angeles Parks and Recreation Men’s Fast-pitch Adult league where I batted clean-up hit over .500, had a slugging percentage of over .750, drove in 15 runs (in 12 games), and won the MVP award for our team. I supplemented baseball by playing Intramural softball at UCLA. In one game at Easton Stadium I hit a homerun over Sunset Blvd. On another occasion, I hit a ball so far the umpire remarked “that is the farthest ball I have ever seen hit.” I feel that my knowledge of baseball and skill set would be very beneficial to your game and I would very much like the opportunity to work with you or your child to become a better player.
basketball
I have played the game of basketball for 19 years and have experience playing through the high school level in the hyper-competitive West Catholic Athletic League located in the Bay Area. I was a 4-year starter who averaged over 10 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists per game over my career. I was recruited to play Division III out of high school for several top programs. I was never the most talented player athletically, but my court awareness and savvy helped me to excel at every level. My high school coach described me as a “renaissance man,” able to play any position on the court (I played them all in one game) and shoot, pass, dribble, and defend with great dexterity. Although 6’5’’ is fairly tall for high school, I played shooting guard and could knock down shots from anywhere on the court. I was always more interested in making my teammates better and felt most comfortable when making pinpoint passes to help them score. I have spent countless hours in the gym and on the court and know every drill imaginable to improve any aspect of your game. Not only do I love playing basketball, I love watching it and consider myself a student of the game. I am an avid fan of UCLA and love their tenacious defense, which I consider a staple for any great basketball player. I also know what it is like to be cut from a team, as after my sophomore year in high school I was cut from summer league. I managed to spend the summer improving and, despite being omitted from summer league, start for the team my junior year. I attended almost every summer camp in Northern California as a kid and have played against the top competition at the annual Las Vegas Hoops Tip-Off Classic, from which numerous professional players have emerged. I feel that my skills and knowledge of basketball could help you improve tremendously and would love that opportunity.
weightlifting
My weightlifting experience includes classroom instruction, personal interest, and application in the weight-room. In high school, I took 2 semesters of weight training from a certified personal trainer. I have always been considered slender or thin up until about a year ago. In June of 2007, I began an intense weight-training program. At the time, I weighed 185 pounds (18% body fat), could max 175 on the bench press, 195 on squats and could do 3 pull-ups on a great day. Less than 1-year later I weigh 205lbs (11% body fat), max at 260 on bench, 295 on squats and can do 12 pull-ups on a bad day. Because of my formal instruction and personal interest I know a wide variety exercises and techniques that have proven extremely effective in my personal regimen. The strength gains above are just examples of the explosive gains one can make with the proper exercises and mindset. Additionally, I am well versed in the various supplements one can take and have personal experience with many of them (all items you can pick up at any nutrition store). I am continually on top of new developments because I actually love working out and getting stronger. The proper combination of free weights, cardiovascular exercise, and rest can make all the difference and I have extensive knowledge of proven training methods. No one calls me skinny anymore!
