About Margaret:

I'm an experienced tutor with a Ph.D. in English literature from UCLA, and an undergraduate degree in English from Brown University. I provide top-notch tutoring in all aspects of English: writing, reading, grammar, and literary interpretation. I have tutored students at all levels, from 3rd grade through high school and beyond. As a tutor, I believe it is my job to get students excited about the subject I am teaching, and I have had very good success turning reluctant readers into kids who choose to read in their free time. My method is to build a foundation in reading and writing by focusing on the particular enthusiasms of each of my students. There are books on every topic, and every child can enjoy reading if the topic interests her. I move on to greater sophistication from this beginning. My goal is to create lifelong readers and thinkers who are able to put their thoughts into clear, persuasive prose. I prefer clients with a long-term approach to bettering their child's performance in reading and writing, and I have had particular success tutoring students whose first language is not English. There are no quick fixes, and real improvement in reading and writing requires extensive practice and dedication! The time students put in is worth it, and will pay off for the rest of their lives. I'm also an experienced swim teacher!
